Neighbors Need to Know

Per ABC13, "It has already been an overactive mosquito season, and with more rain on the way, it will only get worse. To slow the aggressive insects, Harris County Health officials and residents will need to work together.

What's in the air? Heat, humidity, and flooding rains that lead to standing water are perfect breeding grounds for the southeast Texas mosquito. Dr. Max Vigilant, the director of mosquito control for Harris County, says the early heat and flooding rain have caused the mosquito season to rage.

"We have flood water, mosquitos in the flood water. They're the ones that chase people around; they are aggressive," Vigilant said.

Vigilant's office does surveillance and collects mosquitos from traps daily. They're separated, looking for West Nile virus. Laboratory Manager of Operations Lindsey Labouf says they test for West Nile weekly. "We test three times a week for mosquitos, and birds test once a week," Labouf said.

"If positive mosquitos are found, spray trucks are sent, so we know we have to knock out a 5-mile radius around the area that was positive," Vigilant said. Five cases of West Nile have been reported so far this year. Mild cases usually have symptoms similar to the flu, while serious cases can cause tremors, seizures, and confusion.

To protect yourself from aggressive critters, wear insect repellent, tip over containers with standing water, get rid of old tires and debris, and clean drains.

"We're asking them to do those things. Help protect themselves. We can do the other stuff. We can do the rest treating the areas, but residents have to help us," Vigilant said."

Pool Hour Changes

Please note that with school starting on 08/19/2024, both pools will transition to weekends ONLY after 08/18/2024.

Both pools will be open on Labor Day (09/02) and will close for the season after September 29th.

Message from Remington MUD 1

Preparing for Hurricane Season:

It’s crucial to take necessary precautions to ensure your safety and minimize damage to your property.

  • Anticipate Street Flooding: During high-intensity rains, there may be street ponding or flooding if the storm drains are overwhelmed and backed up. Don’t panic if you see water accumulating on the roads. As the rainfall decreases, the storm sewers will catch up, and any water in the streets will recede. This process may take some time, so patience is key.
  • Keep Cars Off the Streets: To avoid damage to your vehicles and to ensure emergency services can navigate the streets, please keep cars off the roads. Park your vehicles in garages or driveways and away from areas prone to flooding.
  • Secure Loose Items: Strong winds and heavy rain can turn loose items into dangerous projectiles. Make sure to bring in garbage cans, any loose furniture, or items outside that may grow wings in the storm. Securing these items not only protects your property but also helps keep your neighbors safe.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather updates and emergency notifications. Local authorities will provide the latest information on the storm’s progress and any additional precautions you should take.
  • Create an Emergency Kit: Ensure you have an emergency kit ready with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents. Being prepared can make a significant difference during and after the storm.
  • Follow Local Guidance: Adhere to any evacuation orders or other instructions from local authorities. They have the most accurate and up-to-date information to keep you safe.

By taking these steps, we can help each other stay safe and minimize the impact of the hurricanes. Stay indoors, stay informed, and take care of yourselves and your loved ones.

Maintenance Updates

  • Cleaned 105 sqft of the brick wall from algae.
  • Started removing road bumps in Lost Mill to prepare for speed humps
  • Repaired elliptical equipment has been moved into the gym.
  • Replaced cracked glass panel at the gym window.
  • Cleared mud off sidewalk in Willow Ranch.

Lake Management:

The crew collected trash and debris from all lakes and shorelines on the Stone Gate side.

Entry Water Features: We noticed a crack in one of the pumps on the NE water feature. I turned the pump off to avoid additional damage and notified our water feature repair team to inspect the issue. All the debris baskets were cleared, and chlorine shock was added to each feature.

Island shores (Lake 1): The lights and timers are functional and accurate. The fountain is running properly. We recorded the well and irrigation meter readings. Treatment was provided for submerged vegetation. The water level is normal.

Island Shores (Lake 2): The fountain is running and flowing properly. The lights and timers are functional and accurate. Treatment was provided for submerged vegetation. The outfall was clear of debris, and the water level is normal.

Bluff Springs (Lake 3): The fountain is running properly. The lights and timers are functional and accurate. Treatment was provided for submerged algae along the bulkhead. We recorded the well meter reading.

Bluff Springs (Lake 4): The lights and timers are functional and accurate. The fountain is running properly. Treatment was provided for minor submerged algae. The outfall is clear of debris.

Harmony Springs: Fountain #2 still has no incoming power due to a dismantled CenterPoint meter. The other fountain and its light set are functioning properly. We recorded the well meter reading. Treatment was provided for submerged algae. The outfall is clear of debris.

Danbury Bridge: All three fountains are running and flowing properly. The lights and timers are all functional and accurate. The crew replaced one broken light mounting clip on fountain #1. Treatment was provided for algae. The water level is normal, and the outfall is clear of debris.

Willow Ranch: The crew reinstalled the West fountain. While conducting the install, we noticed damage to the power cord's pigtail. We replaced it, so the fountain is now running and flowing properly.

Additionally, we noticed the South fountain in Mariner's Bay was not running as we drove through to check the Canyon Lakes side. We reset it and will check on it during next week's maintenance visit to ensure it continues running properly. All other fountains on the Canyon Lakes side were running when we concluded maintenance today. No other issues were detected while on site.

Heron Egret Birds: Tips for Preventative Maintenance

Hundreds of Egrets begin migrating around this time of year in search of a favorable nesting area to form their rookery. History shows that these birds appear to choose the same location each year. When establishing a nest, Egrets are drawn to large, well-established trees, with dense networks of limbs conducive for protection when nesting.

First and foremost, to respect and be aware of: Egrets are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. What does this mean? By law, none of these birds can be killed, or their nests disturbed once they have eggs or young. It is unlawful to do anything to these birds once an egg is in the nest.

Residents can purchase items to help discourage nesting, such as air horns, bright streamers to hang in trees, water nozzles and "scare eye balloons," which are common tools used to scare away birds.
