Diocesan sesquicentennial celebration closes on a gloriously high note

By RICK SNIZEK, Executive Editor, Rhode Island Catholic
PROVIDENCE — The Diocese of Providence’s observance of its 150th anniversary has drawn to a close and the consensus among the hundreds of faithful participating in Sunday’s glorious Solemn Holy Mass at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul was that there couldn’t have been a more soaring and spiritually uplifting way to conclude the sesquicentennial year celebration.
The Apostolic Nuncio (Pope Francis’ official representative to the Church in the United States and to its Government), Archbishop Christophe Pierre, D.D., J.C.D., and more than 15 bishops from across the region — including Archbishop Leonard P. Blair, of Hartford, the Metropolitan See of the Diocese of Providence — were among the honored guests at the June 26 Mass.

Catholic Charity Appeal exceeds goal, tops $6.8 million

By RICK SNIZEK, Executive Editor, Rhode Island Catholic
PROVIDENCE — The 2022 Catholic Charity Appeal in the Diocese of Providence has exceeded 100% of its goal, surpassing $6.8 million in pledges and one-time gifts.
The annual appeal is the primary source of funding for the charitable outreach ministries and work of the diocese across Rhode Island, including the Emmanuel House homeless shelter in Providence, the Saint Martin de Porres Multi-Service Center, the Office of Immigration and Refugee Services, and many other programs providing material and spiritual support to Rhode Islanders in need.
The appeal also supports Saint Gabriel’s Call, a ministry providing material, spiritual, and social-emotional support to pregnant and new mothers as well as their children from eight locations across Rhode Island. The diocese recently announced Bishop Thomas J. Tobin’s commitment to double the assistance provided through Saint Gabriel’s Call.

God Shows us How to Be Pro-Life
June 24, 2022, was an unusual day in the liturgical calendar. Typically, on that day, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Yet, on the Friday following Trinity Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. When two solemnities occur on the same day, feasts of Our Lord are given precedence. So, this year on June 24, we celebrated the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Next year we will return to celebrating John the Baptist’s birth on June 24.

Supreme Court overturns Roe in anticipated Dobbs decision
Diocese of Providence increases efforts to help moms and babies

By Catholic News Service
WASHINGTON — In a 5-4 decision June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its nearly 50-year-old decision in Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion in this country. The court’s 213-page ruling in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization was not totally unexpected due to the leak of an opinion draft a month earlier.
The ruling emphasizes that there is no constitutional right to abortion in the United States. The Dobbs case focused on an abortion clinic in Mississippi opposed to the state’s law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The court’s reversal of its long-standing abortion ruling brings abortion policy decisions to the state level. At least half of states plan to ban or restrict abortions with this decision in place.
