FRIDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK OF LENT
Why Are You Good?
There’s a story about a little boy who was misbehaving in church one day during Holy Mass. His mother corrected him several times, growing more frustrated with each correction. He continued to misbehave. Finally, the little boy said to his mom: “I’ll be good if you give me ten dollars.” To which his mom replied, “Why should I give you ten dollars to be good? Your father is good for nothing.”

A Prayer for the Second Sunday of Lent
As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is “a witness to fraternal charity” and “a work of justice pleasing to God.”
- Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462

A Prayer for the Second Sunday of Lent
Loving God,
there is so much darkness in my life
and I hide from you.
Take my hand
and lead me out of the shadows of my fear.
Help me to change my heart.
Bring me to your truth
and help me to respond to your generous love.
Let me recognize the fullness of your love
which will fill my life.
Free me from the darkness in my heart

Students share their Lenten sacrifice
Lent is an opportunity for greater service and reflection. Rhode Island Catholic asked Catholic school students what they have decided to sacrifice during the Lenten season.

Papal envoy sets off for besieged Ukrainian cities with ‘Gospel weapons’
LVIV, Ukraine (Catholic News Service) — “I’ve come with the three most sophisticated Gospel weapons: prayer, fasting and alms,” Cardinal Konrad Krajewski told reporters in Western Ukraine March 10 as he prepared to head toward Kyiv and other cities under Russian bombardment.

At the behest of Pope Francis, Cardinal Krajewski, the papal almoner, arrived in Poland March 7 to offer encouragement and material help to Ukrainian refugees and the volunteers assisting them. Two days later, he crossed the border into Ukraine.

EDITORIAL: The Death Penalty is Unnecessary
In 2013 Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother detonated two explosives at different points near the Boston Marathon’s finish line, killing three people and injuring hundreds. With his brother Tamerlan killed in the aftermath of the attacks, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received the death penalty after his trial but appealed the decision. His lawyers contended that he was denied due process, which may have lessened his sentence. Recently, in a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court rejected this argument saying that he received a fair trial. Tsarnaev will once again sit on death row.

40 Days for Life presents an opportunity for all to renew their commitment to life

PROVIDENCE — In one hand, Jim Gilcreast held a sign praying for an end to abortion. In the other, he gripped a walking stick that became invaluable to him as he trod the sometimes uneven ground as he made his way across the overpass and toward the local headquarters for Planned Parenthood.

“This walk is tough on me,” said Gilcreast, a past state deputy of the Rhode Island Knights of Columbus, and parishioner of Mary, Mother of Mankind Parish, “but it is very important to be out here.”

Office of Life and Family Ministry Coordinator Lisa Cooley reminds those gathered that the mission of the campaign is to bring together the Body of Christ in a spirit of unity during the 40-day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activities to change hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life.
