FRIDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF EASTER
Witnessing To The Faith
If you follow Catholic news at all, you’re no doubt aware that Cardinal Joseph Zen, 90 years old and former bishop of Hong Kong, was recently arrested by the Chinese Communist government and charged, in effect, with being a dissident. In truth, Cardinal Zen has been a fearless defender of democracy and religious liberty. Even though the Cardinal was detained for only a short time and then released, there’s little doubt that he will continue to be monitored and bullied by the Communist government. His arrest also highlights the plight of the Catholic Church in China that increasingly is being harassed by government officials.

PROVIDENCE — The Diocese of Providence granted $411,637.10 in heating assistance this season, the most aid it has provided in the 17-year history of Bishop Thomas J. Tobin’s Keep the Heat On Program. This amount is more than double the $171,119.55 in assistance it provided last season.

The extraordinary assistance provided to those with no place else to turn to keep their homes warm was made possible by a $250,000 National Grid Foundation grant. This amount matched the energy utility foundation’s previous largest-ever gift to the program.

Diocesan Healthcare Ministry gives thanks for essential workers
By DANIEL J. HOLMES, Rhode Island Catholic Correspondent
PROVIDENCE — Although the frontlines themselves have finally faded, the bravery displayed by frontline workers over the past two years continues to inspire gratitude in the Diocese of Providence.

The COVID-19 pandemic served as a solemn reminder of just how many forms of labor are essential to maintaining our complex modern society, and helped to enkindle a newfound appreciation for the sometimes overlooked workers who keep the shelves of our grocery stores well-stocked, the streets of our communities safe, and the wheels on our busses going round and round.

EDITORIAL: Abortion and Intimidation
If your argument is not so great, just intimidate.

That’s the contemporary philosophy of the “woke progressives” who currently control most of the secular media and academic institutions in the United States of America. And this has been especially evident since May 2 of this year. That’s the day a draft opinion of the Supreme Court concerning the pending Mississippi abortion case was leaked to the public. If it were to become the majority opinion of the court when the case is finally decided in a few weeks, this draft in its present form would overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, and return the issue of abortion to individual states. Not surprisingly, many abortion supporters are infuriated at this prospect. As a result of their apoplexy, churches all over the country have been vandalized and desecrated, pro-life pregnancy centers have been firebombed, and Supreme Court justices — as well as members of their families!—have been harassed and in some cases threatened with physical violence.

Please email the Rhode Island Governor today on taxpayer funded abortion
According to the Providence Journal (5/5/22, page 7A), Rhode Island's Office of Management and Budget produced an analysis on March 24, the key finding of which is that the state of Rhode Island could potentially save $5.4 million a year in taxpayer dollars if we allow state taxpayer dollars to pay for the killing of preborn babies in abortion rather than delivering these same babies.

Saints’ lives prove God’s love for all, pope says at canonization Mass
By: Junno Arocho Esteves
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The lives of the saints prove that holiness is not an unreachable goal accomplished by a select few but comes from acknowledging and sharing God’s love, Pope Francis said.

“Our Christian lives begin not with doctrine and good works, but with the amazement born of realizing that we are loved, prior to any response on our part,” the pope said in his homily during the canonization Mass in which he declared 10 men and women as saints of the Catholic Church.
