TABCOM MISSIONWORKS 2026
Rooted in Christ, Rising in Hope
| | |
What does mission look like right outside our church doors? How can our churches use the people, gifts, resources—and even the property—God has entrusted to us to make a difference in our communities?
We invite you to join us on Saturday, October 3rd at the First Baptist Church in Westwood for MissionWorks 2026, a day of inspiration, conversation, learning, and connection as we turn our attention toward home missions and creative ministry in our local communities.
This year, we are encouraging churches to think outside the box. Ministry does not have to look the way it has always looked. Our buildings can be more than places we gather on Sunday mornings. Our property can become a resource
| | |
for the community. Our congregations can discover new partnerships and new opportunities to meet real needs, build relationships, and share the hope of Christ in meaningful ways.
Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to attend workshops highlighting creative approaches to home mission and community ministry. We will also gather for a special panel discussion focused on community engagement and the creative use of church property—exploring how churches can look at what they already have with fresh eyes and ask, “How might God use this for mission?”
Whether your congregation is thriving, rebuilding, discerning its next chapter, or simply looking for new ways to connect with its neighbors, MissionWorks is an opportunity to learn from one another, share ideas, and imagine new possibilities together.
Our theme, “Rooted in Christ: Rising in Hope,” reminds us that creativity in ministry does not mean abandoning our foundation. Quite the opposite. Because we are deeply rooted in Christ, we are free to reach outward, try something new, and rise with hope to meet the needs of a changing world.
Come ready to learn, connect, be inspired, and dream about what God might do next through your church.
Save the date and join us on October 3 at First Baptist Church in Westwood.
Let’s get rooted. Let’s think creatively. Let’s serve our communities. And let’s rise in hope—together.
| | CELEBRATE 70 YEARS OF GROTONWOOD | | |
TABCOM churches, friends, campers, and supporters are invited to Grotonwood on Monday, October 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for a special day celebrating 70 years of ministry to children, youth, adults with disabilities, families, and congregations.
Throughout the day, guests will have an opportunity to explore Grotonwood through self-guided tours, reconnect with old friends, enjoy an archival display celebrating the history of American Baptist camping ministries at Grotonwood and Oceanwood, and experience music from Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Dana Hicks.
The centerpiece of the celebration will begin with a catered lunch at 12:00 noon, followed by the dedication of the new Prescott Word of Life Pavilion.
Lunch is Grotonwood’s gift to all who have supported and championed its ministry through the years.
The celebration will also provide an important opportunity to remember and give thanks for the legacy of Ed Guerard, a longtime friend and fundraiser for TABCOM and its camping ministries. For decades, Ed faithfully advocated for and supported these ministries, and his final project was inviting others to give toward the creation of the new pavilion. This dedication will be a meaningful opportunity to see that vision realized and to celebrate the collective generosity of all who helped bring it to life.
Lead gifts for the Prescott Word of Life Pavilion were provided by The Charlestown Fund, administered by Jack Alves and Family, and through a legacy gift from the former First Baptist Church of Weston. The pavilion is named in honor of Colonel William Prescott, who was born in Groton and whose legacy has also been recognized at Grotonwood through Prescott Lodge and the Prescott Memorial Garden.
Special thanks go to Steven Cromack, who has taken the lead in organizing this revival of “Grotonwood Day;” the Grotonwood staff who are preparing to welcome, feed, and host guests; Rev. Dr. Hicks for sharing his gift of music; and the many volunteers working to make this a meaningful and memorable celebration.
And TABCOM churches—there is a little friendly competition! The TABCOM church with the greatest number of people in attendance will receive the “Super Church” honor, along with a $500 credit toward a church retreat or summer camp experience for a member or friend.
Come celebrate 70 years of lives touched, relationships formed, faith nurtured, and ministry shared at Grotonwood—and help us give thanks for those, like Ed Guerard, whose faithful support has helped ensure that this ministry continues for generations to come.
Please RSVP so Grotonwood can prepare an accurate count for lunch. You can use the QR code on the event flyer or this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe4B3U9s1CxmlXYoPGajlhzruwkRJCuJ0dZKKoMSfjl_uIDiA/viewform

| | GOOD NEWS FROM OUR CAMPS & CHURCHES | | CELEBRATING NEW PASTORAL LEADERSHIP IN HYANNIS | | |
On Sunday, September 13, Executive Minister Rev. Dr. Mary Hamel joined the congregation of First Baptist Church of Hyannis for the pastoral installation of Rev. Pamela Wannie.
The service brought together friends and ministry colleagues from Pastor Pam’s connections within the United Church of Christ family, including the guest preacher and musicians. Reflecting on the celebration, Rev. Hamel shared, “A sweet spirit of celebration was evident!”
TABCOM celebrates with Pastor Pam and the First Baptist Church of Hyannis family and prays God’s continued blessing upon their ministry together.
| | A JOYFUL VISIT TO COVENANT COMMUNITY CHURCH | |
Rev. Hamel was recently blessed to worship with Covenant Community Church in East Sandwich, where Rev. Tracie Ferrie is serving as Interim Pastor.
Rev. Hamel described it as “a lively morning worship service” and was delighted to have the opportunity to share about the Annual Offerings of our American Baptist family: World Mission Offering, Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering, America for Christ Offering, and One Great Hour of Sharing.
We give thanks for Covenant Community Church and for the many ways our churches join together in mission and ministry—locally, nationally, and around the world.
| | CELEBRATING 25 YEARS WITH THE PORTUGUESE SPEAKING CAUCUS | |
TABCOM was honored to welcome the 25th Anniversary Gathering of the American Baptist National Portuguese Speaking Caucus, hosted by Rivers of Living Water (MIRAV) in Marlborough, where Rev. Roberto Paiva serves as Pastor.
We are especially grateful that two of TABCOM’s own pastors provide leadership to the caucus: Rev. Jackson Oliveira, President, and Rev. Miguel Ribeiro da Silva, Treasurer.
Rev. Hamel joined the celebration and described it as “a great day of worship, fellowship, and learning (plus delicious food!).” She added, “Congratulations and blessings!”
TABCOM gives thanks for 25 years of ministry, fellowship, and faithful witness and celebrates all that God continues to do through our Portuguese-speaking American Baptist family.
| | CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF MINISTRY AT SOURCE OF LIGHT | |
Rev. Hamel joined the congregation of Source of Light International Church in celebrating their 16th Anniversary and giving thanks for God’s faithfulness throughout their years of ministry.
Led by Pastor Rev. Dr. Pierre Miguel Chery, the anniversary service was filled with joyful worship and celebration, including inspiring music from the church as well as guest choirs and musicians.
Reflecting on the celebration, Rev. Hamel shared a simple but meaningful reminder: “Praise in any language blesses the soul.”
TABCOM rejoices with Rev. Dr. Chery and the entire Source of Light International Church family on this wonderful milestone. Congratulations on 16 years of faithful ministry, and may God continue to bless and strengthen the church for many years to come!
| | A SPIRIT-FILLED SUNDAY AT THE AVENUE | |
Rev. Hamel recently joined the church family at The Avenue in Cambridge for a powerful, Spirit-filled morning of worship.
Pastor Jeremy Battle preached from the book of Isaiah on the encouraging theme, “You Will Survive This,” offering a timely message of faith, perseverance, and hope.
Rev. Hamel was especially touched by the congregation’s spirit of hospitality, sharing that she was warmly welcomed from the moment she arrived in the parking lot and throughout her entire visit.
We give thanks for Pastor Battle and the ministry of The Avenue, and for congregations that demonstrate the love of Christ not only through worship and preaching, but also through the simple and meaningful act of making everyone who enters feel genuinely welcome. God bless The Avenue and its continued ministry in Cambridge!
| | A NEW CHAPTER OF MINISTRY IN NORWOOD | |
Associate Executive Minister, Rev. Ron Bouthillette joined the congregation of First Baptist Church of Norwood as they celebrated the installation of Rev. Kevin Marando as their Pastor.
An installation is both a celebration and the beginning of a new chapter of shared ministry. We rejoice with Pastor Kevin and the First Baptist Church of Norwood family as they begin this journey together.
May the years ahead of serving God and the Norwood community together bear much good fruit!
| | FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH LOWELL - JIM SINCLAIR RETIREMENT | | |
Eight years ago, First United Baptist Church searched for a seated pastor. We read through profiles and interviewed candidates. Then came Jim Sinclair. Jim stood by us through our joys and sorrows. Then it was time to retire.
On Sunday, August 2nd, our congregation honored Jim as he entered the next phase of his faith journey. His last service preaching as our pastor included a choir. We followed up with a luncheon featuring Harrow's chicken pie and cake for dessert. (Of course there was food - we're Baptists!)
Members of the congregation had a chance to express their gratitude to Jim and his family as they move on to the next part of their life journey. We wish the Sinclairs a blissful, hard-earned retirement...and we are sure Maine will be a part of it.

| | CONFERENCE OF BAPTIST MINISTERS | | |
The Conference of Baptist Ministers in Massachusetts (CBMM) recently gathered at Trinity Church of Northborough for a day centered on the power of connection—with God, with one another, and through shared worship, music, meals, conversation, and celebration.
A special highlight of the gathering was the presentation of the Daniel Sharp Award for Ministerial Excellence. CBMM President Rev. Jana Yeaton presented the award to Rev. Michael Harvey, the 2024 recipient who was able to be recognized with the group at this gathering, and Rev. Bruce Wall, the 2026 recipient. We give thanks for their faithful and dedicated service to Christ and the Church.
The gathering also included a ministry practices workshop led by Rev. Nancy Willbanks and TABCOM’s Jennifer Sanborn, drawing on the work of Music That Makes Community.
Host pastor Rev. Will Seals warmly welcomed attendees to Trinity Church, which is currently engaged in its “Invest in a Building; Strengthen a Community” financial campaign.
We are grateful for CBMM and for the partnerships that encourage, equip, and connect pastors and ministries throughout Massachusetts and beyond.

Churches are more than places of worship. They’re community and event spaces, workplaces, and often safe havens for people of all ages. With that broad role comes a unique set of risks—everything from a visitor slipping on icy steps to sensitive donor data being stored online.
Insurance plays a vital role in helping churches care well for their people and resources. It’s not about expecting the worst; it’s about good stewardship and ensuring the ministry can continue even when something unexpected happens.
No two churches are alike. A small congregation that meets on Sundays and offers a few programs will have very different needs than a multi site church with dozens of staff members, vehicles, and programming every day of the week. The right insurance plan depends upon a religious organization’s size, activities, and location. We share the major types of insurance churches should consider, but this is not an exhaustive list.

| | AMERICAN BAPTIST WOMEN'S MINISTRIES OF MASSACHUSETTS | | |
Dear Churches,
Grace and peace to you!
The American Baptist Women's Ministries of Massachusetts has long been a place where women have grown in faith, built lasting friendships, supported missions, and encouraged one another in Christ. For generations, this ministry has been a source of inspiration and service throughout our region.
Like many organizations, the ministry has experienced significant challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic, and participation has declined. Today, we find ourselves at an important crossroads. While we are grateful to have dedicated individuals serving as Treasurer and Secretary, we are currently without a President and Mission Coordinator. Without additional leadership and renewed participation, the future of this vital ministry is uncertain.
We believe God is still calling women to lead, serve, and encourage one another, and we are asking for your help.
We invite the women of your church to prayerfully consider becoming involved—not only by attending meetings, but also by serving in leadership roles. Whether you have years of experience or simply a willing heart, your gifts and talents can make a meaningful difference.
If you have ideas for the future of American Baptist Women's Ministries of Massachusetts or would like to explore serving in a leadership position, we would love to hear from you. Please respond by September 30, 2026.
Please send your interest or ideas to:
Naomi Stanley at naomi.stanley@comcast.net
Together, we can preserve and strengthen this ministry for future generations of American Baptist women.
We hope you will prayerfully consider joining us as we seek God's direction for the future.
Continuing in His Service,
Naomi Stanley, Treasurer
Jennifer Cromack, Clerk
