Dear ones,
When I first arrived at St. Barnabas, one of the things you asked me to pay attention to was ministry with children and families. And so I began to talk with you about the reality that every single one of us is responsible to and for the children and youth in our parish. We cultivated a welcoming environment for kids in church. I recruited and trained more than twenty volunteers as Godly Play Storytellers and Shepherds. I told parents not to worry about their children making noise, because that’s what children do. And I told them to sit in the front or let their children stand up on the pews so they can see what’s happening at the altar. Have you ever watched a child watch the priest who is consecrating the bread and the wine? It’s incredible! They may not know intellectually what is going on, but they do know something is going on!
This Sunday, we begin the most robust children and youth programming at St. Barnabas in at least a couple of decades, and we need your support! I am asking you to renew your commitment to support our children and youth, and one of the best ways you can do that is to be a presence in their lives. You can become a Godly Play Storyteller or be a Shepherd who is simply another loving adult in the Godly Play circle. You can be a youth group volunteer, watching movies, eating pizza, interacting with and supporting our middle school and high school youth. Or you can check in with Etienna and learn other ways to support our children and youth programming–there is a place for everyone!
We really are all responsible to and for the children in our parish. With Etienna serving as our new Family Ministries Coordinator/Youth Leader/Godly Play Leader, we have an extraordinary opportunity to help our children explore their innate spirituality, to offer them the Bible stories that are their heritage, to provide an environment that is absolutely non-judgmental, to be the other grown-ups in the world who love them. I believe kids need church more now than ever, because there are so few places other than home, where they can know themselves as utterly beloved.
Children are not the future of the church. They are the church, just as the grown-ups are. And when we show up as the church for them, we receive far more than we give. The children and young people at St Barnabas are absolute treasures, and they will bless you far more than you can imagine. Thank you for thinking about this. If Etienna contacts you about volunteering, I hope you’ll say “yes.” If she doesn’t, I hope you’ll contact her.
Can’t wait to see you in church on Sunday!
Faithfully,
Karen†

Kick–Off Sunday, September 22
Let’s kick off the new program year this Sunday with a festive lunch, windows into the upcoming program year, a (happy!) financial update, and introductions to Invite, Welcome, Connect (a program that will help us discover how best to do all those things) as well as Worship+2. The choir will be joyfully singing again, Adult Formation and Godly Play resume, and the newly formed Youth Group for middle and high school students goes into full swing (more info on Family Ministries below)! We look forward to sharing all of this with you!

Godly Play Resumes on Sunday, September 22! |
Grades PreK–5 | 9:45 a.m.
Join us on Sunday mornings for Godly Play! With Godly Play, we make meaning through story, wonder, and play, nurturing the spiritual lives of young people by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children. Godly Play Play is for young people (or those young at heart!) ages 3+ who are ready to have fun exploring the movement of God in our lives and in the world around us.
Get to church a little early and meet in the Youth Room (formerly the Room with a View, across the hall from the library). After checking your little people in with the door person, parents can go to church and enjoy worship on your own. Children will be brought back into church during announcements in order to celebrate Holy Communion with their family and their St. Barnabas community.
Click the button below to view our schedule through November!
| |
Godly Play In-A-Day Training |
Attention Godly Play volunteers! Whether you’re a newcomer or veteran to the Godly Play methodology, you are invited to a day of workshops, idea-sharing, and fun! Etienna will be attending this training, so if you would like to carpool please email etienna@stbbi.org. Click the button below to register! If you need assistance with the registration fee, please let us know.

Sunday Afternoons
Grades 6–8 | 2-4 p.m.
Grades 9–12 | 4-6 p.m.
It has been some time since St. B had consistent activities for middle and high school students, and I am so excited to bring this back to our church community! I ask for your patience and prayers, and hopefully lots of enthusiasm, as we begin this journey together.
Youth Group kicks-off this Sunday, September 22! Please click the button below to access our Fall 2024 Youth Group schedule through November.
We will kick-off our time together by getting to know one another, playing games, and hanging out for the first couple of weeks. We were recently gifted a foosball table for the youth room, along with a laser tag set (more thanks to Barbara Herrick!). I’m pretty stoked about all that, and hope the youth will be, too!
We won’t dive into our Holy Troublemakers and Unconventional Saints book and curriculum until October. We’ll be exploring the lives and legacies of individuals profiled in this book as part of our time together on Sundays in youth group. Short summaries are available to share from the curriculum, so don’t feel like you have to purchase the book! However, it is a great resource to have on hand if you want to get a copy for your family. I look forward to great discussion with the youth of St. B springing from the histories and stories in these pages.
We’ll also continue our monthly movie nights in October and November. On Saturday, October 19, we’ll watch Hocus Pocus, and on Saturday, November 16 we’ll take-in Addams Family Values (which has a fun Thanksgiving sub-plot!). This is a great opportunity to hang out together as a community with nothing but fun on the agenda! Dinner and sweet treats will be provided. Please RSVP so that enough food can be provided for everyone.
| |
On Sunday, October 27 we will host our inaugural Trunk-or-Treat, potluck dinner, and Spookarist Eucharist! This event will be fun for all ages, with our trunk-or-treat beginning at 4 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner in the Parish Hall at 5 p.m., and our Spookarist Eucharist at 6 p.m. What is a Spookarist Eucharist? I’m so glad you asked! This is a regular church service, but with costumes! Kids and adults alike can—and are encouraged—to wear their Halloween costumes to church! We will also have special readings from scripture (think Valley of Dry Bones from Ezekiel, or the beautiful story of Jesus raising of Lazarus from the dead in the Gospels), and some exciting music. Save the date to join us for this fun and festive event!

Musical Seasons
From Music Director and Organist, Sheila Bristow
|
I’m so appreciative of folks who provided special music at summer services. The list includes the Island Winds recorder quartet (Peggy Eichenberger, Drucy Burnet Hodge, David Hoopes, and Sally Sulonen); Parish Choir members Rob Arlen, Mari Bickford, Don Hanke, Lori Knoebel, Evan Lenz, Peter Schindler, and Roger Vielbig, plus choir fan Heidi O’Brien; Schola Nova members Barbara Sauer and Pat Speidel; staff singers Rae Hyra, Emily Neer, Joshua Shultz; and finally our own Rev. Jim Friedrich (on the beach). We also had St. Barnabas representation in the massed diocesan choir for last week’s amazing consecration liturgy—thank you, Cathy Davies and Christopher Harvey!
This Sunday, the Parish Choir resumes singing at the 10 a.m. service, and Schola Nova’s monthly Vespers series begins with a 6 p.m. contemplative service focused on St. Hildegard of Bingen. Autumn is also bringing a couple of special organ events: the Spookarist Eucharist will feature, of course, spooky music (Sunday, Oct 27 at 6 p.m.), and I’m performing a solo recital on our wonderful Bond instrument on Sunday, November 24 at 2 p.m. A reminder that special services and concerts are a great way to introduce friends to the music and community at St. Barnabas—let’s spread the word!

Vespers with Schola Nova Is Back! |
St. Barnabas’ Schola Nova invites you to Vespers this Sunday, September 22 at 6 p.m. Please join us as we celebrate St. Hildegard of Bingen, which is our first in a series of three Vespers services honoring female saints. Save the dates for our Vespers services celebrating St. Teresa of Avila on October 20, and St. Margaret of Scotland on November 17.
If you are a treble singer interested in participating, please contact Music Director Sheila Bristow at sheila@stbbi.org.

Introducing New Musicians!
We are delighted to welcome a new singer, Joshua Schultz, as a regular staff singer at St. Barnabas! You will see him in the bass section most Sundays at the 10 a.m. service. Also, soprano Emily Neer frequently steps in to sing; she will also be guest directing Schola Nova next Sunday. Here is more information about Joshua and Emily:
Joshua Shultz (bass) is a singer from Bremerton, WA. He has starred in numerous stage musicals and operas with CSTOCK, Olympic College, and Kitsap Opera. Joshua earned his bachelor'ss degree in Music Industry from The College of St. Rose in Albany, NY and seeks a music business career alongside releasing his own original work. He and his partner, Katherine, have two daughters.
A versatile lyric soprano experienced with opera, art song, choral, and sacred music, Emily Neer is originally from Poulsbo, Washington. She received her Bachelor of Music in vocal performance and church music, summa cum laude, from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where she worked under the guidance of soprano, Dr. Anne Jennifer Nash. Emily currently serves as the Director of Music at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island, leading the Vigil and Compline choirs and overseeing the program. You can also hear her sing with the Amabile Choir of Bainbridge Island under the direction of Sylvia Cauter. Emily lives on the island, where she enjoys baking, traveling, and camping around the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks, Librarian Barbara |
Please join me in thanking Barbara Herrick for her long years of service as our Church Librarian. Her love of our library was so evident in the way she lovingly cared for its contents and the volunteers who served alongside her. Barbara recently handed the reins to a committee of volunteers who have begun work in the library. Welcome and thank you to this group of folks willing to help: Yvonne Rolston, Melanie Roth, Carrie Beyer, Michael Fitzpatrick, and Etienna Wright! We look forward to hearing about your library work once you’ve settled in.

Church Lock and Key Changes |
Please be aware that the installation of new locks and keypads has been completed at St. Barnabas! This has happened campus–wide on all interior and exterior doors. Most doors have been updated with the new locks, while the parlor door, the sacristy door nearest the sanctuary, and the kitchen door have been outfitted with keypads.
Unique codes were sent out to individuals who requested them this week! If you are clergy, staff, a lay ministry leader, or an active lay ministry participant who requires access to the building outside of regular church service or office hours and you have not yet done so, please click the button below to fill out the keypad code request form. Please be reminded that we must have Safe Church certifications on file in order to issue an individual a code. If you have requested a code but have not yet completed your Safe Church certifications, you will receive your code once we receive certification confirmation from the diocese.

There is increasing evidence that plastics represent a great risk to the health of humans, animals and the environment. While plastics can take over 1,000 years to completely break down, microplastics can be released immediately, such as when you remove the cap from a plastic water bottle. Research shows that microplastics are found in numerous human tissues and are linked to inflammation, noncommunicable diseases, hormonal changes and brain capacity.
All of this adds up to a plastic health crisis. Microplastics are everywhere, but will become even more ubiquitous since plastic production continues to accelerate. Some types of plastics are necessary, but the plastic industry also profits from manufacture of many unsafe products.
What can we do? We can limit or stop our use of disposable, single–use plastics —referred to as “stupid plastics” in a recent article in The Guardian. We can urge policymakers to force manufacturers to provide clear labeling as to what chemicals are in their plastic products and insist that manufacturers replace single–use packaging with reusable types. We can support zero–waste stores and buy brands that are working on reusable systems.

Praying For Each Other:
The St. Barnabas Prayer Chain
| |
Is there someone you would like us to pray for? Would you like to pray for others in our community? The St. Barnabas Prayer Chain consists of a group of volunteers who believe in the power of prayer and who willingly and regularly pray for others. Drucy Burnet Hodge (drucy15@msn.com or 206/780-2904) coordinates our chain, receiving requests for prayers, and sends those prayers out to the ones who pray. If you would like us to pray for you or someone you love, please contact Drucy. Prayer requests can be as simple as giving a first name and asking for prayers or more detailed, if you’d like. Parishioners remain on the prayer list for a month, non–parishioners for two weeks. The long-term prayer list is periodically reviewed and revised. If you would like to join us in praying for the people on our Prayer Chain, please email Drucy at drucy15@msn.com, and ask to be added to the list.

Kitsap Opera Presents Rossini’s Cinderella
Kitsap Opera is presenting Rossini’s Cinderella next weekend, Sept 20 & 22, at the Admiral Theater in Bremerton. There are many St. Barnabas connections: Music Director Sheila Bristow is rehearsal pianist and harpsichordist, and her husband, Glenn Guhr, is stage director; staff singer Rae Hyra is covering the role of one of the evil step sisters, Tisbe, and assisting as a stage “ninja”; Parish Choir member Peter Schindler is in the chorus; and finally, the artistic director of Kitsap Opera is former staff singer, Andrew Etherington. Join us for a night at the opera—click for tickets!

Pilgrimage to the Presidency |
“How can we the Church engage in the realm of politics while maintaining our integrity, our love of God and neighbor, and our commitment to the common good?”
As we approach the US presidential election, with politics dominating the news and many people’s thoughts, we explore how Christians have grappled with the political world, and what that means for us in a 21st century democracy as we look to do the same. Join Br. Lucas of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist, beginning the week of September 15 for weekly videos and conversations with guest speakers about theology, prayer, and discernment, along with livestreamed conversations with SSJE brothers and a livestreamed vigil through the night on Election Day. We seek to answer the question: how can we the Church engage in the realm of politics while maintaining our integrity, our love of God and neighbor, and our commitment to the common good? Follow along at Pilgrimage to the Presidency.

You can get well-fed—physically and spiritually—at Kick-Off Sunday, and then scoot on over to EHCC for their Crop Dance! If you have been a member of this community for a while, you may remember the long–standing tradition of the Bainbridge Island–North Kitsap Interfaith Council’s annual Crop Walk. It had fallen by the wayside during the pandemic, but has been reorganized this year as a Crop Dance! All dancing will be lead by spiritual dancers and should prove to be a great time for all. The Crop Dance will be held at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church in Winslow on the afternoon of September 22, with registration beginning at 1:30 and the dance starting at 2. Click here for more information or to register in advance.
Ordination and Consecration of the
Ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Olympia
| |
The Ordination and Consecration and the Seating of The Rev. Dr. Philip N. LaBelle as the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Olympia was a joyful occasion last weekend! More about this festive and blessed day can be read here. If you’d like to learn more about Bishop LaBelle, visit the diocesan website.
October 25-26 | Tacoma Convention Center and Marriott Hotel
Rest. Engage. Pray. Over the last two years, we have been busily engaged in the work of transition, listening, discerning, and preparing to begin a new season as the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia. As we cross the threshold into a new life together with a new bishop, it’s tempting to rush forward without first taking stock of where we are and where we’re heading. Instead, let us heed Christ’s invitation: “Come to me, and I will give you rest.”
In this 114th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, join us as we come together after a season of transition to rest in Christ, to engage deeply in the meaningful work of the Diocese, and to pray together as a community, heeding the call of our Savior and striking out in a new direction together. Learn from one another at workshops, celebrate milestones in the life of our Diocese, worship with Episcopalians across Western Washington, and hear from Bishop LaBelle as he begins his journey with us in the Diocese.
Rest. Engage. Pray.
