"I've Never Had An Unhappy Day"
A number of years ago I attended the episcopal ordination of a new auxiliary bishop in another diocese. At the end of the ceremony, as is the custom, the newly minted bishop addressed a few remarks to the assembled congregation. He thanked everyone for attending and participating in the ceremony; he thanked God for his priestly vocation; and then he said this: “I’ve never had an unhappy day as a priest!”
Those words struck me then and remain with me now. He didn’t just say that he was happy being a priest, or that he never regretted his vocation. He said he “never had an unhappy day!” “Wow,” I thought to myself. “Either this guy has been really lucky or he’s out of touch with reality.” Everyone, in any field of endeavor, has some unhappy days, don’t they?

By RICK SNIZEK, Executive Editor, RI Catholic
PROVIDENCE — Despite having to navigate unprecedented financial challenges presented during the first and second years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Diocese of Providence managed to close out the 2021 fiscal year on very sound financial footing, according to the annual diocesan audited financial statements for its General Fund, Catholic Charity Fund — including its annual appeal — along with Catholic Cemeteries.
As outlined in the report, diocesan combined assets — which include cash, outstanding receivables and investments for the Catholic Foundation of RI, diocesan lay and priest pension funds, medical fund and the Interparish Loan Fund — are up $68.83 million, a 27% increase over the previous fiscal year, for a total of $324 million.

Ash Wednesday 12:05 p.m. Holy Mass with Bishop Tobin in the Cathedral
Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Diocese of Providence, will preside at the 12:05 p.m. Mass on Ash Wednesday March 2 in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence. Bishop Tobin will bless and distribute ashes to the faithful to mark the beginning of the Lenten season during the Mass. All are welcome!
This year, Lent begins on March 2 as we observe Ash Wednesday. It continues through the afternoon of Holy Thursday, April 14, and ends as we begin the Sacred Paschal Triduum with the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit." Pope Francis reminds us, "God's mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn."

Kenney, Chancellor Timothy D. Reilly, Cathedral Rector Msgr. Anthony Mancini and about a dozen priests from across the diocese.

The Church in America is living through one of the great transitional periods in the two millennia of Catholic history. George Weigel, biographer of Saint John Paul II, will explore what that transition means and how an evangelically vibrant Church could help heal a fractured American public culture.
This event is co-sponsored by the Portsmouth Institute for Faith and Culture.

ACTION ALERT: Women’s Health Protection Act
Please act BEFORE this Monday, February 28
On Monday, February 28, the Senate will vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act, H.R. 3755. This deceptively-named, extreme bill would impose abortion on demand nationwide at any stage of pregnancy through federal statute.
Even worse, it would eliminate modest and widely supported pro-life laws at every level of government -- the federal, state, and local level -- including parental notification for minor girls, informed consent, and health or safety protections specific to abortion facilities.
It would force all Americans to support abortions here and abroad with their tax dollars.
It would also likely force health care providers and professionals to perform, assist in, and/or refer for abortion against their deeply-held beliefs, as well as force employers and insurers to cover or pay for abortion.
