What Happens When God Does Something New?
Since the earliest days of the Christian church, faithful people have wrestled with how best to be the church in a changing world. Acts 15 reminds us that disagreements about the future of the church are nothing new. The debate in Jerusalem was not simply about whether Gentiles should be welcomed into the church. Everyone in the room could see that God was doing something new. The deeper question was this:
If God is doing something new, what happens to us?
Earlier this week, my colleague, Rev. Matt Skolnik (Muskingum Valley Presbytery), posed a question in an article that immediately caught my attention: What Are We Afraid of Losing? The more I sat with that question, the more I realized it gave voice to something I've been hearing throughout Foothills Presbytery.
As we partner with congregations navigating leadership transitions, changing communities, stewardship of buildings and resources, and new opportunities for ministry, we often begin by talking about finances, leadership, property, or programs. Yet the deeper we move into discerning God's future, the conversation often shifts to questions of faith practices and identity.
For generations, God's people had been shaped by practices that reminded them they belonged to God. Those practices were not arbitrary rules; they were gifts that formed their identity and sustained their faith through centuries of hardship. It is not difficult to imagine why change felt risky.
The same is true today. Congregations across Foothills Presbytery realize that whenever they enter a season of change, the conversation eventually moves to the deeper questions Matt asked in his article:
What are we afraid of losing?
Will we still recognize ourselves?
Will we lose what has made us who we are?
Will our children and grandchildren inherit the same faith that we received?
Those are faithful questions. Peter's response offers a quiet reassurance. God "made no distinction between them and us, cleansing their hearts by faith" (Acts 15:9). Their deepest identity was not found in preserving every familiar practice but in the grace of Jesus Christ.
Across Foothills Presbytery, I see congregations asking courageous questions, honoring their past while remaining open to God's future, and discovering that faithfulness is not about holding more tightly to everything familiar. It is about holding more deeply to Christ.
Perhaps that is the invitation before us—not to fear change or chase it for its own sake, but to trust that the One who has faithfully led the Church through every generation is still leading us today. These are challenging days, but they are also days filled with holy possibility.
Grace and peace,

In the Think Tank Report, we recognized that "The health of the church is deeply tied to the health of its leaders. Throughout the listening groups, there was a clear recognition that leaders are being asked to carry increasing complexity, often without sufficient support."
Our Spotlight for the Future response included partnering with groups such as the Board of Pensions: "Cultivating an eco-system of wholeness and wellbeing for leaders, this includes not only training and development, but also spaces for rest, reflection, and restoration."

Many Presbyterians know that Montreat Conference Center offers a special setting in which to nurture faith, form friendships, and rest from their labors. Members of Foothills Presbytery may not know, however, that our Presbytery and many of its member churches have long supported the mission of the South Carolina Inn at Montreat. Founded in 1912, the SC Inn endures as a ministry of the five presbyteries of South Carolina by offering hospitality and a place of retreat for pastors, church leaders, families, and church members from the five presbyteries.
The Inn is open year-round and a variety of rooms can be reserved for individual and group use. You can book your next room with a view of beautiful Montreat.
And, if you can’t visit this year, but would like to help Foothills Presbytery support the on-going mission of SC Inn at Montreat, give via this GiveButter campaign link.
