The NAF-Fulbright Grant brings scholars from the Netherlands and the United States to the United States and the Netherlands respectively to pursue opportunities to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The exchange between the two counties follows the NAF’s mission of strengthening the ties between the two countries. The NAF currently provides 12 Open Study/Research awards, 1 specialized award in Pediatric Cancer Research, and 1 specialized award in Flood Management.
This month we interviewed the current Fulbright recipients that are here in the US from the Netherlands. Keep an eye out for interviews with the US NAF-Fulbright fellows in the Netherlands in future newsletters.

Donate from your IRA
Did you know there are tax-smart opportunities to give to the Netherland-America Foundation? One way to give is through your IRA.
If you are at least 70 ½ years old, you can donate tax-free from your IRA. Donations from your IRA can be made in any amount, from $100 up to $100,000. These gifts count toward your IRA Required Minimum Distribution amount for the year, yet they do not count as taxable income.
The most important stipulation of donating from your IRA is that you must not withdraw your gift into another one of your personal accounts. Your gift must be transferred directly from the custodian of your IRA to the Netherland-America Foundation.
And if you’re at least 59 ½ years old, you can take a distribution, then make a contribution from your IRA without penalty. The amount can be deducted from your itemized taxes.

Atlanta Chapter Launch Event
|
On November 16th, Dutch-American Heritage Day, the Consulate of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will host a special, invitation-only, event to celebrate the launch of the Atlanta Chapter of The Netherland-America Foundation (NAF).
One hundred years after the NAF was founded in New York City, Atlanta will become the 10th NAF chapter in the US. Its mission will be to “build bridges between the Netherlands and the Southeast United States, by enabling the exchange of people and ideas that create appreciation, progress, and tolerance.” The launch of the new NAF chapter is a recognition of the growing importance of Atlanta as a cultural and economic hub and is a testament to our strong roots in this community. As the gateway to the Southeastern United States, Atlanta already hosts a successful Netherlands American Chamber of Commerce and the Atlanta Holland Club. A number of distinguished guests and speakers, including The Carter Center CEO Paige Alexander, will join us on November 16th.

Dutch Investors and the Sovereign Debt of the Early United States
|
The early American Republic, united under the Articles of Confederation, had limited ability to raise tax revenue. As it struggled to meet its debt obligations, Dutch investors played a crucial role in providing the young state with the financial resources it needed. In this webinar, historian Peter Veru will discuss his research on how Dutch bankers helped stabilize the public finances of the early United States and explain how the Dutch financial community saw America’s future at the time.
