A Christian Has to Live in the World

St. Gregory the Great was a pope who lived in the second half of the 6th century and the beginning of the 7th. He’s been honored with the title “Great” because he had a profound and lasting influence on the Church and the world of his time. (It’s the same reason, I believe, that St. John Paul II should be called “Great.”)
But Pope Gregory had a problem. He found it very difficult to carry out his spiritual duties while dealing with the temporal problems, the administrative demands of his office. In a homily that’s found in the Office of Readings on his feast day, September 3rd, we find this...

History of SS. Peter and Paul to be the first in new series on iconic local churches
By DANIEL J. HOLMES, Rhode Island Catholic Correspondent
PROVIDENCE — As the central hub of diocesan life for the past century-and-a-half, the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul is certainly terra cognita for most Rhode Island Catholics. Many readers, for instance, will already know that the tomb of Bishop Thomas Hendricken is situated adjacent to the cathedral’s western wall. Even those who attend Mass there weekly, however, are likely unaware that the eastern wall of the cathedral is built over an equally historic set of remains: the nearly 200-year-old-wooden skeleton of the parish’s original structure.

PROVIDENCE — In August, more than 100 people gathered at the annual Seminarian and Parent Celebration Dinner, sponsored by the Serra Club of the Diocese of Providence. The evening honored the Diocese of Providence’s newly ordained priest, Father Mark Gadoury, and the 16 seminarians discerning and studying for priesthood in the diocese, including five currently studying in Rome. The Serra Club’s Providence chapter is part of the national organization whose mission it is to pray for, foster and promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life in the Catholic Church under the patronage of Saint Junipero Serra.

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin installed Father Michael McMahon as the new pastor of St. Philip’s parish in Greenville on Sunday, Sept. 25. Bishop Tobin was the principal celebrant at the Holy Mass, which was concelebrated by Father McMahon and Father Philip Dufour, assistant pastor. Deacon Joseph Day assisted.
“I welcome you to this very special liturgy this morning, on a blessed day, in which we come to install a new pastor, a new shepherd for your parish community,” said Bishop Tobin in his opening remarks.

Royal Pageantry and Sacred Ritual Unite People to Their Heritage
By Father Nicholas T. Fleming, pastor, SS. John and James Parish, West Warwick
With the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and the long-awaited ascent of her son to become King Charles III, England has become the focus, once again, of great pageantry and palace intrigue. There is lots to be said for the pomp and circumstance, the great processions of the royal guard and the great solemnity with which it all takes place; it is a kingdom, after all.
Those familiar with Mass in the “usus antiquior” might remember with more or less enthusiasm the pageantry surrounding our sacred rites. The incense, the long processions, harmonious choir, and throngs of people dressed in their Sunday best, along with the “palace intrigue” surrounding the secretive movements around the altar, all demonstrate the high solemnity of the sacred mysteries. It is a heavenly banquet, after all.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Jesus never abandons, coerces or blackmails anyone when they stray, rather, he patiently waits and is “our greatest and most faithful friend,” Pope Francis said.
“He remains at the door of the heart. We say, ‘No, I do not want to know anything about you.’ And he remains silent, he remains there within reach, within heart’s reach because he is always faithful,” the pope said.
“It is a grace we must ask for one another: to see Jesus as our greatest and most faithful friend, who does not blackmail, above all who never abandons us, even when we turn away from him,” the pope said Sept. 28 at his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square.
