Everlasting Light
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.
John 1: 1 - 5
Each Advent season, I get to read Advent devotions from a multitude of congregations. Everyone is unique. Each takes its own journey through the days of Advent, shaped by local stories, lived experiences, music and distinct voices of faith. And yet, together, they share a common thread: a deep attentiveness to the vastness of both darkness and light.
At its best, the body of Christ has a remarkable ability to hold space between the pain of darkness and the promise of hope. These devotionals do not shy away from grief, uncertainty, or weariness. Instead, they place those realities alongside the steady glow of Christ’s light—reminding us that hope does not deny darkness but meets us within it.
Advent can sometimes feel like a liturgical logistics exercise—counting days on a calendar, lighting the right candle at the right time. But what Advent truly offers is something deeper: a chance to exercise our spiritual muscle memory. Year after year, we practice remembering how God shows up – often in unexpected ways.
In these daily reflections, we are invited to pause intentionally and notice how the light of Christ brings peace, comfort, and joy—even as we continue to navigate the shadows. Through many voices and many paths, Advent leads us again to the same truth: the everlasting light shines, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Grace and peace, In Christ,
