From the Co-Presidents

Happy New Year CPWC Members!

December was a fun-filled month of holiday gatherings for our CPWC members! We are so grateful to all the ladies who contributed to making these events so special and to you the members for participating in these events.

The Annual Yule Log event on December 10 was a great success even though we had to make a location change at the last minute. The weather prohibited us from gathering at McFarlane Park and Janie Kissling was able to reserve the fellowship room at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Santa Claus arrived and offered many photo ops. There was hot cocoa and cookies, games, prizes, crafts, candy, and face painting. Many thanks to our three co-chairs, Janie Kissling, Kristin Bernheim Farnsley, and Alex Lopes for making this such a special event for our little ones!

We had a great turnout for our annual Holiday Gift Exchange and Cookie Swap and Lunch on Friday, December 15.  Thank you, Dawn Wadsworth, for opening your beautiful new home to us! At each of our daytime events we sell raffle tickets to support the charity for the year and we collected $410 in cash and $390 in checks payable to PORCH Marietta for a total of $800! Thank you, daytime program co-chairs Melissa Nicol, Janie Kissling, Maryam Askaran, and Grace Becerra.

A special shout out to Angela Boardman, Charity Chair, who has been working closely with PORCH Marietta this fall. She organized two events this month to help them assemble bags and deliver them to Sawyer Road Elementary Food Pantry. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with this!

And finally, many of us took a break from the holiday preparations and had a purely social get-together on December 19 at Chris Cashman’s home. Thank you, Chris, and our evening team co-chairs, Paty Holdmeyer, Pat Iaffaldano, Missy Malmberg, and Patty Pace.

Looking ahead to 2024, we are very excited about all the many CPWC programs that are planned. Please be on the lookout for all the links to register for them.

Your CPWC Co-Presidents,

Susan Fulkerson and Martha Altieri

Daytime Program Meeting

January reminds of us reading in front of the fireplace covered by a snuggly blanket. Our CPWC meeting features our neighbor, Chika Unigwe, who is a Nigerian-born, award-winning author of 4 novels and many short stories and articles. Meet Chika and hear about her latest novel, The Middle Daughter, and her heritage and book-writing process. It is a lush, powerful tale of family and sisterhood.

When seventeen-year-old Nani loses her older sister and then her father in quick succession, her world spins off its axis. Isolated and misunderstood by her grieving mother and sister, she’s drawn to an itinerant preacher, a handsome self-proclaimed man of God who offers her a new place to belong. All too soon, Nani finds herself estranged from her family, tethered to her abusive husband by children she loves but cannot fully comprehend. She must find the courage to break free and wrestle her life back—without losing what she loves most.

A modern reimagining of the myth of Hades and Persephone within a Nigerian family, The Middle Daughter charts Nani’s journey to freedom and homecoming.

The meeting will be held on January 19 from 10:30 -12:30 at the home of Anita Best Misel,

4815 Mulberry Drive, Marietta, 30068

Family Activities

Our CPWC YULE LOG EVENT on December 10 was lots of fun and quite successful despite the rain.

Many thanks go out to the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection for allowing us to hold our event in their fellowship space at the last minute. It was warm, dry, and decorated already with tables, centerpieces, and a bedazzled Christmas tree.

We are also grateful for Santa Carl, face-painter Andrea Morreira, and our Chairs, Kristen Bernheim Farnsley and Alex Lopes. We had volunteers of all ages from kids to teens to young and old CPWC members. We appreciate Ryan Farnsley and his kids, Jack and Will; Harper Strong; Ava Seiling; Emmy Seiling; Ava Cronin; Kerry Siesenop; Sterling Lanken and her daughter Sterling; Debbie Vaky; Nina Hickox: Lesli and Ryan Asielo; Larry Armstrong; Santa’s Elf, Lynn Thompson; Rep. Sharon Cooper; and CPCA Board member Jerry Thompson. Others helped by bringing cookies—thanks to Trisha Wegner, Harper Strong, Julie Zeier, Amy McConnell, Sterling Lanken, and Rep. Sharon Cooper.

Although the rain prevented us from having our bonfire and s’mores outside, we did give each kid and family a little bag of s’more fixins as they left.

Christmas Eve meal for Police Precinct 4

Precinct 4 was so appreciative of the generosity and kindness of

our neighborhood this Christmas Eve. The photo above was from the

very first Christmas Eve meal in December 2007.  Lt. Mark Chenowith and I created this tradition to continue fostering the relationship within the community. It has only grown since

2007 and is loved by the neighbors and the local law enforcement.

Thank you to all who participated and if you were unable to support us this year - there is always next year!

Sincerely,

Heather Rees
