Wildfire season is a time of heightened anxiety for Marin residents
Marin County’s evacuation readiness is a priority that reflects the tireless work of fire and police departments, emergency management, public works, Fire Safe Marin and community preparedness groups like Firewise. This shared commitment is the backbone of Marin’s evacuation planning.
Marin is leveraging cutting-edge technology to detect wildfires early and manage evacuations effectively. Our network of mountaintop cameras, powered by AI, gives emergency personnel real-time alerts when smoke is detected.
When evacuations are needed, agencies use Hi-Lo sirens, and some are adding Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD) to alert neighborhoods quickly. The County’s alerting systems have been upgraded, and residents can access live evacuation maps at Marin's Public Emergency Portal.

Updated General Plan, Safety Element and Land Use Element
Updates to the Fairfax General Plan were adopted at the July 16, 2025 Town Council meeting. These are targeted updates to the General Plan’s Land Use and Safety Elements in response to State Law.
The current Fairfax 2010 to 2030 General Plan is a broad, long-term policy document that guides future development and conservation within the Town, serving as a blueprint for growth and land use decisions.
The General Plan is intended as a “living document” that is updated from time to time to implement the Town’s vision for the future.
There has been some misinformation about the Council's recently approved General Plan updates. To clarify: height limits are not established in the General Plan—they remain in the Zoning Code. In addition, while the Workforce Housing Overlay (WHO) includes height limits, California law requires the Town to allow additional height if needed to accommodate state-mandated low-income bonus units.
These recent updates are summarized on the town website here.
For more information please visit the General Plan page on the Town website.
