An Easter Tradition
by Elizabeth Cerri, Trinity, NC
A 4-year old child doesn't understand the religious reason behind Easter. A 4-year old understands chocolate, candy, and the Easter Bunny. Every year, I like to share my family's Easter tradition. Feel free to enjoy it with your family.
On Easter evening after I put my daughter (Janet) to bed, I would get her basket ready. I filled the basket and placed it on our dining room table. Next, I took a cotton ball and Q-tips, dipped them in flour, and made paw prints from the edge of the table to the basket. (The cotton ball made the paw pad, the Q-tips for the toes.)
The next morning, Janet would race down the stairs to find her basket. “Mommy, he came! Look at my basket, and I can see where he walked,” she would squeal happily.
With the best scowl I could muster, I'd say “Oh that bunny left his dirty paw prints on my table!”
A few years later, I began the Easter eve ritual. However, I discovered I had no flour in the kitchen. Improvising, I decided to use some of my dusting powder. I made the prints and went to bed.
The next morning, Janet discovered her Easter treasure, As I began to frown at the paw prints, she said “Mommy, don't get mad at the Bunny. He washed his feet this time – smell how pretty!”
This is a memory I hope I never forget. Thank you for letting me share it with
you.
Happy Easter.
