Special Days
by Elizabeth Cerri, Trinity, NC
Today I received a text from my brother wishing me a “happy siblings day.” I
chuckled, but then I had to pause. At 73 years old, I remember when most months had a holiday like Christmas, Washington's Birthday, Easter, or the 4th of July. But when the heck did someone create a special day for SIBLINGS?
In fact, nowadays we've deleted, modified, or added so many days that it makes me dizzy. We even have special MONTHS. One has to ponder...with all these “special” days and months, does anyone work a full week or month anymore?
Having said all this however, there are real special days left (at least in my
opinion), and one of them is Mother's Day. According to Britannica, President Woodrow Wilson declared it as a national holiday in 1914. In the US, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. The day is celebrated in other countries on different days.
Initially, people wore a white carnation in honor of Mom. Later, this morphed into wearing a pink carnation for living mothers and white for deceased. Over the years Mother's Day, like most things, has become more commercialized; cards, gifts, cakes, and even vacations.
As a mother, I think it doesn't need to be so commercialized. Just remember the day, acknowledge and thank your mom for everything she does and has done, make her a card that she can put on the fridge, and okay....make her breakfast in bed or take her to dinner!
And remember the wise things she taught you. For example, “Don't make that face. If the wind changes, it will stay that way!”
Happy May and Mother's Day.
