May 2022

Campus Community,

Thank you for a great school year! We made notable progress on promoting and enhancing safety services. Much of these accomplishments were achieved by connecting with the campus community on all levels, listening to stakeholders and being deliberate with goals and strategies. Some of the highlights are: added off campus lighting, promoting alternatives in emergency response, additional patrols, escorts and visibility in key locations, getting back to levels of engagement we had previous to COVID and promoting a safe culture on campus.

Members of the Department of Public Safety continue to focus on building trust and being responsive. It’s rewarding to hear from many of you through positive (as well as critical) feedback that our public safety work is valued. My thanks to a group of alumni who recently visited DPS. They wanted to meet the DPS team and provided a lunch to share. As with any connection, we learned a lot from them and appreciate their generosity.

Enjoy the summer and stay safe!

Cops and Coffee with The Aurora Center

Every spring semester we partner with The Aurora Center to host our Cops and Coffee event. Although the weather did not fully cooperate this year, we were still able to connect with our community over coffee and donuts.

We hosted a free Self Defense Workshop at the Rec Center that was open to all faculty, students and staff. Thank you to the Recreation Wellness center for partnering with us for these events. Students and staff were thrilled to learn more about personal safety and self defense. We look forward to hosting more of these events for our community this summer and into the fall.

Thank you to Shivam Sharma, President of Hindu YUVA, for the invitation to their outreach event. Hindu YUVA is a multicultural student organization on campus. The organization aims to disseminate awareness about Hindu culture, traditions, and art forms among the university community.
