News for Faculty and Staff from Human Resources
|
|
Let us know what you think about this new format for the newsletter. We are open to all suggestions to improve the format and the information provided to better serve and inform you. This issue will be rather short due in part to the new format, but also because it is summer time and there is not that much news to share. Thanks to Paul Stokstad with his suggestions for many of the changes.

Ayurvedic Tips to Stay Cool & Survive Late Summer
Early fall is a transitional stage, as we move from the height of summer’s heat to cooler weather. In Ayurveda, the change from summer to fall is known as Ritu Sandhi, the gap between seasons. This gap can present a delicate time for digestion, because the weather fluctuates—along with the doshas and digestive capacity.

Golden Dome Market and University Store Discount Stickers
Just a reminder that in order to use your benefit of 25% discount in the Golden Dome Market and University Store, you MUST present your badge with a valid sticker to the employee who is checking your items out.
We cannot count on or expect the employees in the GDM and University Store to know you all by heart, it's not a fair request. Additionally, employees have different benefit packages and the GDM/University Store employees are not required to memorize those either. They are however expected and required to go by the stickers you have on your badge.
When they ask to see your badge, it's not out of distrust, it's a procedure that has been put in place by Management and that they are required to fulfill.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

August National Yagya for the United States
|
Maharishi explains the mechanics of Yagyas:
“The Pandits make a resolution and then do what is prescribed to create that quality of intelligence in their own consciousness from the level of the omnipresent Transcendental Consciousness. “From there, they produce the desired effect in space and time.
“It is called ‘Sankalpa’. “Sankalpa is the resolution in the beginning of the Yagya. They make a resolution. Then, sitting in one place, they produce an instant effect.
“The Yagyas are with many people. Bigger Yagyas are with many, many people. Larger groups of Vedic Pandits performing Yagyas will take care of all kinds of negative trends in society.” —Maharishi, May 18, 2005
The next 11-day U.S. National Yagya
SM
performance will begin on the evening of August 12.
The Sankalpa of the Yagya will be:
Increasing harmony, positivity, and spiritual awakening for the United States and its people.

How Transcending Optimizes Your Brain
Revolutionary TM research advanced the science of human potential
BY DAVID ORME-JOHNSON, PH.D.
This article is part 3 in Dr. David Orme-Johnson’s series on the Scientific Quest for Enlightenment.
|
|
What happens to our brains when we practice Transcendental Meditation and transcend? Do we experience a new state of consciousness that’s different from waking, dreaming, or sleeping? If so, how does that help us realize our highest human potential?
These were some of the questions that our group of international researchers were trying to answer in the 1970s. Based at Maharishi European Research University (MERU) in the Swiss and French Alps, we were on a quest to create a scientific portrait of Transcendental Consciousness, the state we all experience
when we practice the TM technique

A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office.
"Is it true," she wanted to know,
"that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?"
"'Yes, I'm afraid so,"' the doctor told her.
There was a moment of silence
before the senior lady replied,
"I'm wondering, then,
just how serious is my condition
because this prescription is
marked 'NO REFILLS'.."

An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation.
As he was about to get the anesthesia, he asked to speak to his son.
"Yes, Dad, what is it?"
"Don't be nervous, son; do your best,
and just remember, if it doesn't go well,
if something happens to me, your mother
is going to come and
live with you and your wife...."

CAN MEDITATION CURE STRESS?
The David Lynch Foundation CEO on the benefits of a regular practice
|
|
|
|
"For optimal health, it's not just attending to the neck down-this is my physical activity, this is the food I'm eating," says Bob Roth, CEO of the David Lynch Foundation in New York City, a non-profit that teaches Transcendental Meditation.
"The brain is three pounds and it runs the whole body." Roth believes that the epidemic of modern stress is literally killing us-and could be the cause of up to 80 percent of illnesses and disorders.
And while there's no magic pill, meditation can be one tool for fighting back, and quieting the mind despite all the worry, fear, and anxiety we're faced with daily. And research backs this up.

Stressed out? Anxious? Looking for peace? Why some are turning to Transcendental Meditation
|
Dozens of celebrities have touted the benefits of Transcendental Meditation…from Katy Perry to Paul McCartney, Nicole Kidman to Hugh Jackman, and even billionaires Rupert Murdoch and Oprah Winfrey. Regular folks here in southeast Michigan are among TM’s fans, too.
James Cahaney, longtime TM teacher and Regional Director of the Transcendental Meditation Center in Metro Detroit, is interviewed along with local practitioners.
