5 Ways to Up Your Bliss and Skip the Stress during the Holidays

Lifestyle tips to make the season merry, bright, and light! BY NANCY LONSDORF, M.D.

With Thanksgiving behind us, the holidays are well underway! Does that thought provoke tummy tension or fill you with childlike excitement? Judging by the plethora of “Holiday Blues” discussions, many of us can find this time of year stressful, as much as we enjoy it too.

Since you know I’m an Ayurvedic and Western physician, you won’t be surprised when I point out that all the holiday shopping, family visits, and travel can “aggravate Vata,”  which means they put our nerves and hormones into overdrive .

Sound familiar? Feeling overwhelmed, frazzled, and stressed out can send our neuroendocrine system into high gear. This can disturb our sleep, mood, immunity—and, yes, happiness itself.

The good news is that while holiday stress may have no clear antidote, a Vata imbalance is easy to correct. Let’s hit the high points here. I know you want to get back to enjoying the season!

MUM's New MEG'Array in the News
News of MUM's MEG'Array Solar Power Plant launch
Friday, December 14 was a Great Day for MUM, Ideal Energy, the City of Fairfield, and the state of Iowa! Thanks to Ken Chawkin here are some reports on that day's launch of MUM's MEG'Array Solar Power Plant. Matt Kelley of Radio Iowa interviewed Dr. Hagelin that morning and it aired at 1pm to over 70 Iowa radio stations. Matt Milner, editor of the Ottumwa Courier , had also interviewed Dr. Hagelin, then attended the event and published his article later that day. Both KYOU TV and KTVO TV attended the day's activities, and interviewed our representatives along with Fairfield Mayor Ed Malloy and Congressman Dave Loebsack . Even Chuck Offenberger , former Des Moines Register columnist, tweeted our success!
MEG'Array lights up MUM campus
By Matt Milner  Dec 14, 2018
FAIRFIELD — One of the most advanced solar power arrays in the world is now active in Fairfield.

The “MEG’Array Solar Power Plant” will provide about a third of all the electricity needed for the Maharishi University of Management’s campus. It could be more as technology and expansion takes place in years to come.

Dr. John Hagelin, MUM’s president, said the solar array moves the school considerably closer to a commitment it made two years ago to have it achieve carbon-neutral status within 10 years. He couldn’t resist a joke about how fast the technology is changing.

Maharishi University now features state’s largest solar array By MATT KELLEY DECEMBER 14, 2018
MEGArray Solar Power Plant.

A small southeast Iowa college now boasts the largest solar array in Iowa, which is also billed as being the most technologically advanced solar power plant in the world.

John Hagelin, president of Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, says the five-acre, 1.1 megawatt array is run by an “artificial intelligence learning computer” and it’s like none other — anywhere. “Every single solar panel tilts independently of each other and it’s constantly adjusting to take into account clouds, sunlight reflected from the snow,” Hagelin says, “and if the panels get snow on them, the panels will dump the snow on the ground.”

Maharishi University goes green, installs solar energy panels by Alonso Reyna December 14th 2018
FAIRFIELD, Iowa — Conservation and renewable energy. Fairfield’s Maharishi University inaugurated their solar panel project on Friday afternoon.

“We’re launching, just now the most advanced solar array on earth. The very sophisticated powerplant. It’s going to supply 40 percent of the electricity for the whole university,” said John Hagelin, President of Maharishi University.
The project will save the school about a quarter of a million dollars each year. The solar panels have smart technology and follow the sun throughout the day. It also has other special functions.
“It’s got an artificial intelligence learning computer that runs the positioning of all those thousands of solar panels to dodge clouds and to catch light reflected from the snow and to dump snow off the panels,” Hagelin explained.
The Maharishi university is one of the first universities to develop a renewal energy project of this magnitude.

Maharishi University of Management has undertaken Iowa’s first large-scale solar & storage project with two objectives:

 Achieve the University’s renewable energy share goals

 Significantly lower the University’s overall electricity costs, via both energy usage reductions and peak demand shaving

The new solar & storage power plant brings the University’s renewable energy share to around 43%. By combining active tracking technology with battery energy storage MUM will cut its utility costs by a projected 30%.
