Food, Mood and Digestion: The Mind-Body Connection
Linda Egenes interviews Vaidya Manohar Palakurthi on November 16, 2016
Vaidya Manohar Palakurthi is a highly respected ayurvedic expert in the western world and India. He has been practicing ayurveda for 33 years.
Here, he talks about the relationship between food, mood, and digestion.

Q: How does food affect our moods?
Vaidya Manohar:  The food we eat has a significant influence on our minds and hearts. You could even say that the nature of our mind and feelings depends on the food we have eaten.
And conversely, the state of our mind, emotions, intellect and senses — and our overall state of contentment — all these, in turn, affect the digestion, absorption and elimination of the food we have eaten.

According to Maharishi Ayurveda, the digestive enzymes and metabolic processes are likened to a fire, called  kaya agni  in Sanskrit. How well we digest the food depends on the strength of our  agni . And because kaya agni also influences the agni (metabolism) in the tissues and cells of the body, any disruption in digestion affects our entire physiology.

We can say that the entire health and happiness of each individual depends on the strength and functioning of our kaya agni, our digestion. In fact, one of the major limbs of ayurveda is called  kaya chikitsa , which is concerned with balancing kaya agni to bring health and happiness to the entire mind-body system.

So both food and our moods have an effect on our digestion, and conversely the strength of our digestion has an effect on our moods.

Q: What is the connection between food, mood and the brain?

Grammy Award-Winning Omar Akram: April 29, 2019
Most people think that if you have enough money to do a project, then you can succeed. I learned the hard way — money alone is not enough. It’s a combination of your talent, vision, hard work and resources. Everyone will give you advice, but only take it from people that have succeeded. In the beginning, I took advice from anyone who remotely did any type of music, or had minimal amount of music business experience. Soon I realized that I should only listen to people that had some measure of success.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

What helps me is meditation. I would highly recommend it to my colleagues. I’ve been doing Transcendental Meditation for many years and it has had a big difference in my life.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or example for each.

Zac Efron tried transcendental meditation to shake off Ted Bundy role
Actor Zac Efron turned to transcendental meditation (TM) to help decompress after struggling to separate himself from his role as serial killer Ted Bundy in his new movie.

The Greatest Showman star takes on the controversial role in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, which chronicles Bundy’s crimes from the viewpoint of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins.

Zac was intrigued to explore Bundy’s violent history after being approached by director Joe Berlinger, but he didn’t realize how tough it would be to shake his onscreen alter ego at the end of each day’s shoot.

He tried to relax with TM, a form of silent mantra meditation, and although it definitely helped, he wasn’t able to completely switch off as Bundy while he remained on location.

“I did breathing and meditation. I think that’s the only way,” he told Entertainment Weekly of how he would wind down after work.

“I really love TM, transcendental meditation. I did TM on the way home. Not while driving, but when you’re shooting a movie, one thing we can afford is a ride home, so on the way home I just do some TM and try to phase out of it.”
