SREC Prepares to Launch Automated Non-Emergency Triage for
Crime Check Calls

We are excited to share that we're preparing to launch Automated Non-Emergency Triage on the Crime Check line—an important step in improving how we deliver fast, accurate service to our community.

This technology, built by Prepared, is designed to help connect non-emergency callers to the right resources more quickly while preserving critical 911 personnel for life-threatening emergencies. AI-supported triage is not new—numerous 911 centers across Washington State and around the country already use similar systems for non-emergency calls and have received positive feedback from the communities they serve.

Why This Matters

Crime Check receives more than 250,000 calls each year, and roughly half of them end up requiring a law, fire, or medical response. Because these calls must be dispatched, they are handled by the same highly trained Communications Officers who answer 911.

The remaining calls fall into two major categories:

  • 28% are general questions or requests for information and are best directed to partner agencies or community resources.
  • 18% need a non-emergency police report written by SREC’s Report Technicians.

By introducing automated triage, callers who need emergency dispatch will still be immediately transferred to a Communications Officer, but those looking for information or referrals will be able to get what they need much faster—including having resource information texted directly to them. Callers needing to file a report can also be transferred immediately.

How the System Works

When someone calls Crime Check at 509-456-2233 to report issues like abandoned vehicles, traffic concerns, or other non-urgent situations, an AI-powered assistant will greet them and help identify their needs.

  • Emergencies are immediately transferred to 911.
  • At full launch, callers will be able to interact in English or Spanish.
  • The goal is simple: help callers get the fastest service possible while keeping 911 lines available for true emergencies.

Testing and Next Steps

SREC conducted its first public test of this system on November 19, following six weeks of preparation. The team is now reviewing what we learned so we can make adjustments and conduct another test before full implementation. Pending successful testing, SREC expects to launch the service by the end of 2025.

“By integrating automated triage into the Crime Check line, we’re ensuring that callers get routed to the right resources quickly while preserving our 911 lines for life-threatening emergencies,” said Kim Arredondo, SREC Deputy Director. “This technology enhances our ability to serve the community with both efficiency and care.”

Keep Your Holiday Deliveries Safe: Tips to Prevent Package Theft

It’s unfortunate that we have to plan around situations like package theft, especially during the holidays, but staying aware and taking a few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping your deliveries safe. With gift shipments and online orders at their peak, porch pirates are more active this time of year, and a little preparation can make all the difference.

Here are some easy ways to protect your deliveries this season:

Track your packages closely.

Sign up for delivery alerts so you know exactly when something arrives.

Bring packages inside promptly.

The less time a box sits on a porch, the fewer opportunities for theft.

Consider alternative delivery locations.

Have items delivered to your workplace (if allowed), to a trusted neighbor who’s home during the day, or to a secure package locker.

Use “hold for pickup” options.

USPS, UPS, FedEx, and Amazon all offer local pickup locations where you can retrieve packages at your convenience.

Add delivery instructions.

Ask drivers to place packages in a less visible location—behind a planter, on a side porch, or inside a screened area.

Install doorbell or exterior cameras.

Visible cameras can deter theft and provide helpful footage if something goes missing.

Keep your porch well lit.

Motion-activated lighting can discourage unwanted activity.

Build a neighborhood watch mindset.

Let trusted neighbors know when you’re expecting a delivery.

With a bit of awareness and preparation, you can help ensure that holiday cheer—not stolen packages—makes it to your doorstep. If you do experience package theft, remember to report it to Crime Check by calling (509) 456-2233 or file a theft report online here. You should also report the theft to the delivery carrier.

Happy Thanksgiving from SREC 911

As we head into the holiday season, we want to pause and express our deep gratitude to the people who keep our community safe every single day of the year.

Thanksgiving is a time meant for gathering, rest, and reflection—yet many of our own SREC 911 employees will spend the holiday here in the center, answering calls, dispatching help, and ensuring our region is protected. We are profoundly thankful for their dedication, professionalism, and the personal sacrifices they make to serve others. Their commitment to our mission, even when it means time away from loved ones, does not go unnoticed.

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of our law enforcement, fire, and medical partners in the field. Your teamwork, trust, and tireless service make it possible for us to keep moving forward together. Thank you for standing watch over our community, especially during times when most are able to rest.

This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for each of you—our staff, our first responder partners, and the community we serve. We wish you and your families a safe, warm, and meaningful holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at SREC 911.
