This Fall on Election Day on November 8, the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial (LCWM) School District, like most other School Districts in Minnesota, will be holding a School Board Election. The LCWM district has four School Board positions up for election in 2022. The dates for candidates to file for School Board are from August 2 to 12 at the LCWM District Office, which is now.
I will not be filing for re-election to the LCWM School Board in 2022. I have served on the LCWM School Board for the past 33 years. I have found the experience of being on the LCWM School Board to be very rewarding and enjoyable; however, it is time to move on and let some others have that opportunity.
I would like to stress the importance of serving on a local School Board. Many times, parents and other folks in a community say “they are too busy” or “they do not have enough knowledge” to serve on the School Board, or they say “it is too political” and may affect their children or grandchildren in school. Well first of all in Minnesota, School Board elections are “non-partisan”. Most School Board members serve because they believe in student achievement and have the desire to have a high quality, cost-efficient education system in their community.
Secondly, there is no established “knowledge base” to be a good School Board member. All it takes is having a willingness to learn and a passion to want to help kids and serve the community. There are plenty of resources available to help School Board members improve their efforts. Lastly, everyone is busy and can find excuses not to file for School Board; however, what can be more important than developing high quality educational opportunities and experiences for our youth, whether it be your own children or other young people in the community.
If you have any questions about the role and responsibilities of serving on the School Board, feel free to call me at (507) 381-7960. I would encourage LCWM residents to consider filing for the LCWM School Board by Friday, August 12 at the LCWM District Office.
When considering whether or not to file for the LCWM School Board ……
If for no other reason …… ”Do it for the Kids” !
