QUOTES WORTH REMEMBERING
Today, I’m thinking about some quotes that are important to me or that I’ve read recently that are worth sharing.
I start with the wisdom of Calvin Sailer, my father: There’s no such thing as a bad day, only different degrees of good. Not original, but something he would say to me.
I continue with the wisdom of Francis (“Rev”) Rossow, my favorite seminary professor: We know precious little about God, but what little we know is precious.
I include the wit and wisdom of Jeffrey Gibbs, retired seminary professor and author of the Matthew commentaries in the big fat, blue commentary series by CPH:
There are no great men or women in the church. None. There is only the Great Man. And yes, of course, He has servants of various and manifold giftedness. But “giftedness” is a passive notion and hence my point—only the Giver is great and to Him alone is all honor and glory. Celebrity culture is a frontal assault on the Gospel. Thank you, and be sure to take your Romans 12:3 “appropriate humility pills” today—it will actually make you feel a lot better, and might make us all more effective servants of the Great Man. (Face Book post, Feb. 14, 2022)
Since you’re busy, I’ll include Romans 12:3 here, and I quote:
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Finally, this quote -- my favorite words from the Old Testament, foretelling our redemption:
Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:4-6)
God bless and keep you, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ!
