The Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau (PAVB) welcomes Sarah Ombry as its new marketing & communications director. Ombry, brings over seven years of industry experience to northern Michigan and the Petoskey area. Working with the entire PAVB team, Ombry will lead the bureau’s efforts to increase consumer awareness, opinion, and consideration of both leisure travel and group business in the Petoskey area as Michigan’s only true four-season destination by developing and implementing its annual marketing and communications strategy. She will work closely with the bureau’s social media & content manager to provide integration of messaging across owned media channels, and alongside the bureau’s group sales director on paid media programs targeting destination meetings, conferences, and group travel. Previously with Petoskey Plastics, Porter brings over 30 years of diverse experience and administrative skills to northern Michigan and the Petoskey area. Porter will provide a variety of administrative support for the day-to-day operations of the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau. This support includes managing guest information requests, bureau board/member communications, accounts payable, expense tracking, various bookkeeping functions, administering bureau meetings/elections, and providing admin support to the bureau staff. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan (Bigs) recently honored Tyler Bartosh as big brother of the year and Jill Jelinek as big sister of the year at the Bigs Social on Thursday, January 18 at MiddleCoast Brewing Company. Each year, Bigs honors two outstanding volunteer mentors to serve as the locally recognized ambassadors of Bigs demonstrating the impact mentoring relationships have on children and their future success. Tonight, January 19 at 7:00 p.m., comedian Kermet Apio is returning to Great Lakes Center for the Arts. He was a fan favorite last summer when he opened for comedian Brian Regan, so they’ve invited him back to kick off the new year. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Kermet has called Seattle, Washington, home since college. Kermet, a self-proclaimed playful procrastinator, broke into the comedy scene in the late 90s. After that first open mic night at the Comedy Underground in Seattle, Kermet was hooked and soon ditched the security of a 9-to-5 to embrace performing and making audiences laugh full-time. Saturday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Crooked Tree Arts Center, Blissfest Presents: Good Morning Bedlam as a part of Downtown Sound. Good Morning Bedlam is the folk-rock band from Minneapolis, MN made up of Tori and Isaak Elker. In 2019 they claimed the first-place title at the John Hartford Memorial Festival Band Competition and were finalists at the NWSS Band Competition. Their shows are known for their wild energy and stunning harmonies. Join the Leadership Little Traverse (LLT) Class of 2023-24 for a Luncheon Lecture at North Central Michigan College on January 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The class will share a brief overview of the 9-month professional leadership program and what led the group to choose the Child Care Initiative (CCI), a community-driven effort to address the undersupply of child care in Emmet County, as their community service project. Jennifer Wixson will share findings from Phase 1 of the CCI and an overview of identified community-based innovations in an introduction to Phase 2. ADHD in Teens: Understanding & Managing ADHD. Learn strategies for helping your teen succeed through the challenges of ADHD, the most common childhood neurological disorder which often causes serious problems at school and at home. Join them for an evening to learn more about ADHD, including strategies for how to help your teen and family better manage ADHD symptoms. Thursday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom, join the Little Traverse Historical Society for a lecture entitled: Transportation. Originally presented by Allan McCune and Mert Carter in February, 1974, this program will share the history of railroads and steamships in the area. Mert Carter was part of the group that wanted a canal built between Crooked Lake and Little Traverse Bay and his part of the program featured the Inland Waterway. January 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of Challenge Mountain, a non-profit organization that provides adaptive recreational opportunities, cultural programs and social events for people living with cognitive, physical, and mental disabilities. “We are proud of where we’ve come, and even more excited about our future,” shares Elizabeth Gertz, Challenge Mountain executive director. “Every achievement is a milestone, both for our organization and for our amazing participants.” Challenge Mountain began as a dream of Darla Evans, the parent of a daughter living with a disability. Chrissy was confined to a wheelchair with limited opportunities to experience activities with family and friends.
