President’s Message

Happy Holidays from your friends at United Way. It has been one heck of a year, I’m sure you’ll agree.

At United Way we have had so much on our plates, and we are – in fact -- grateful for that. We’ve had successful days of caring, including a Community Baby Shower, a shoebox project to support at risk seniors, a distribution of beautiful flowers to homeless moms on Mother’s Day, food and school supplies drives, and a gleaning event which produced thousands of pounds of apples for our local pantries.

We’ve also had some great fundraisers, including not just our traditional Over the Edge and Sleepout events, but also this past month our very first ever “CARE-E-OKE” event at the Nashua Center for the Arts. That evening was so much fun, with 15 different competitors doing karaoke on stage in front of several hundred participants and being judged by celebrities including Mayor Donchess, the Editors of the Telegraph and the Union Leader, and football legend Kendall Reyes.

And we continue to do a large number of regularly scheduled events, including weekly pop-up food pantries, bi-weekly food drives, volunteer driven school tutoring, Rosie’s Pantry to help end “period poverty,” and deliveries of food to homebound pantry clients. With all of this, we remain hopeful for the future of Greater Nashua. We are encouraged by community support and the ever-present commitment of our volunteers, donors, and sponsors. All of them exemplifying our credo that Great things happen when we LIVE UNITED.

Digital Equity Can Help Make Our Community Even Greater

I often joke with people about my age. Perhaps it’s what happens when you get into your late 50’s, but somehow I often find my “advanced age” to be a humorous thing. Mostly it’s just a self-deprecating kind of humor about the things I can no longer do, the things I forget, or the things I don’t understand. But the truth is, I think I’m still pretty “with it” and feel blessed to have a mind that and body which all seems to still function at a pretty high level. When I reflect on my age, one thing which really stands out for me is how dramatically technology has advanced during my lifetime. In particular, digital technology. Read more.

Amazing Volunteers

Volunteer Highlight

United Way would like to thank their amazing volunteer, Padmaja Kunapareddy! Padma is the Director of Software Engineering at Upland Software, a member of Rotary International, a member of the Nashua Public Library’s Board of Trustees, and is a much appreciated member of United Way’s Community Advisory Council!

She has been volunteering with United Way since 2021. She’s been involved with many of our fundraisers, Days of Caring, and weekend item drives, like this year’s Care-E-Oke and Gleaning United, many weekend food drives and women’s hygiene supplies drives, United (w)E-Recycle, our Kevin Slattery Memorial Food Drive, and our Rod Hansen / TAPP School Supplies Drive.

Padma loves to volunteer and to bake, and we’re grateful for both!

Stay United - For Retirees

Members of United Way’s volunteerism group for retirees, “Stay United” have been working on several initiatives that support older adults and bring them together as volunteers.

“Coffee and Causes”, a series of monthly talks on topics relevant to older adults, takes place on the first Friday of every month at a different location in the Greater Nashua area. Topics at our recent “Coffee and Causes” have been the NH State Plan on Aging, Advocacy, Veterans’ Services, and in December, Digital Equity.

A small group of United Way volunteers have also been working with Main Street Methodist Church and Emmaus Institute on a series of weekly online conversations for isolated seniors called “Let’s Talk”. In addition to these two projects, the group has been working on bi-monthly story times for pre school-aged children at Waypoint called “Wee Read United”. Information about these projects can be found on the United Way of Greater Nashua website.

Days of Caring 2023 - Recap

United Way has had our most phenomenal year of “Days of Caring” yet! We started with the “Shoebox Project for Seniors” in early February. Thanks to our generous donors, volunteers, and friends we were able to compile 530 “shoebox” kits for low-income, homebound seniors in Greater Nashua. Next up was the “Community Baby Shower” where almost 50 new families learned about resources available for them, selected items from our one-day “Baby Boutique” and celebrated their new addition! Donations from our generous community provided 130 mothers living in transitional housing with Mother’s Day bouquets. Our volunteers collected close to 5000 lbs. of food at our annual Kevin Slattery Community-Wide Food Drive in June and collected piles and piles of school supplies for our Rod Hansen / TAPP School Supplies Pantry. And finally, our volunteers at “Gleaning United” harvested 8000 lbs. of apples at Kimball Fruit Farm in Pepperell, MA which were donated to 17 local nonprofits. We had a great year, and we hope you did, too!

Sponsor Highlights

Things are always happening at the United Way and one of the great ways to get involved is to become a sponsor and get the inside scoop of the fun events that you can put on your calendar for 2024. Our day of caring sponsors help us to make five out of our 11 events a success before they even happen and the get first access to great volunteer opportunities too. Those five events are made possible by partnerships with other nonprofits and for-profits alike, they are a gift to the community, an educational opportunity, and finally, some of the nicest volunteer opportunities we have in the year.

This year's events were so successful that we intend to include all of them again in 2024! You can see another article that describes all of 2023's successful Days of Caring but to that I add a bit about the why of these events. The shoebox project is an opportunity to care for isolated seniors and the particular difficulties that they face. The community baby shower allows expectant parents to learn of helpful programs before their young children age out of them. The community-wide food drive, held in June, provides a ton of food to local food banks and pantries at a time of year that is historically not a time when people donate heavily but is a time when need increases as schools gets out. The back-to-school drive helps support learners who want to prepare for school equally to their peers but do not have parents who understand or are able to fully equip them, it also prevents teachers from using their personal pay to support these students. Finally, the gleaning or food harvesting event is another event to reduce food insecurity and increase fresh produce that can be supplied for free to members of the community.

A wonderful sponsor that we have been lucky to have support from over the last few years is NBT Bank.

They have come on board as one of our superhero Day of Caring sponsors. We appreciate that their goals align with ours and that they are helping us to do our part to create a flourishing community. They have chosen to invest in a program that offers tangible goods to particularly disadvantaged groups of our community, but that also offers wonderful volunteer opportunities for hundreds of people. If you have been moved by the meaning behind any of these Days of Caring, please consider sharing the idea of sponsoring them to a community business that you love. Also, consider reaching out to save the date for volunteer opportunities associated with them. Finally, please take a moment to appreciate the Day of Caring sponsors from 2023 and our newest Day of Caring sponsor, NBT Bank.

Shoebox Project for Seniors

Our annual shoebox project is a community effort to put together important resources for low-income, homebound seniors. Each year a themed collection of useful items is assembled into hundreds of gift packages to be distributed through our partners – Meals on Wheels, The Caregivers, and Gateways Community Services.

The community can get involved by donating items like these: puzzle books, healthy recipes, note and greeting cards, stamps, magnifying glasses, pocket calendars, small stuffed animals, colored pencils, adult coloring books, combs & brushes, dentals floss, facial tissue, travel size shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, hand cream, hot chocolate, tea and coffee bags. We hope you’ll support our efforts by purchasing some of the items on the list and dropping them off or having them mailed to our office at 20 Broad Street, Nashua, NH 03064.

In the News

Care-E-Oke

United Way of Greater Nashua’s inaugural singing competition fundraiser “Care-E-Oke” brought together 15 local performers Wednesday, October 25th at the Nashua Center for the Arts which was attended by audience of 300.

The singing competition was judged by Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess, local football legend Kendall Reyes, Nashua Telegraph General Manager, Chris Johnson, and longtime local reporter, Dean Shalhoup. The Master of Ceremonies was Mike Morin (Radio/TV personality, Telegraph columnist, award-winning author).

The annual event supports United Way’s community safety net, which in turn provides funding for 24 local nonprofit organizations in Greater Nashua working in the areas of health, education, and economic mobility. These include places like the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua, Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County, Operation Delta Dog, Greater Nashua Dental Connection, Stepping Stones, and Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity.

United Way of Greater Nashua is grateful to the following companies for their generous sponsorship of the event: Service Credit Union, St. Joseph Hospital, The Telegraph, New Hampshire Union Leader, Center for Physical Therapy and Exercise, Shaheen and Gordon, Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, and Delta Dental.

Skydive United

When 25 brave souls jumped out of a perfectly good airplane on August 26, it was quite a sight to see. If you add to that the reason – ending youth homelessness in our community – then it’s also going to make you feel good. And when you add that the fact that 321 donors contributed $43,699 to the cause – well that just makes us beam! This was the biggest ever SKYDIVE UNITED and to honor our jumpers and donors, we made two $2,500 donations to local nonprofit organizations which we are partnered with to end youth homelessness in Greater Nashua: Stepping Stones and the Nashua Children's Home.

The funds they received, and the funds we raised, will help young people experiencing homelessness in so many different ways… sometimes education, sometimes food, clothing, or shelter, and always necessary to achieve stability and long term success. We would be remiss in not recognizing our great jump teams this year from the Nashua Police Department, Nashua Fire Rescue, and St. Joseph Hospital. They were all fearless in their efforts… it takes a lot to jump out of a plane at 11,000 feet! And of course, we express a lot of special gratitude and love to our always-amazing sponsors, including St. Joseph Hospital, Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, Delta Dental, and Fully Promoted of Southern New Hampshire. It really does take a village, and this event is always in that spirit!

Gleaning United

On Monday, October 16, United way of Greater Nashua hosted our 2nd annual "Gleaning United" Day of Caring.

45 United Way of Greater Nashua volunteers harvested 8,000 pounds of apples left in the orchards of Kimball Fruit Farm after their initial harvest.

The food collected was donated to Corpus Christi, SHARE Outreach, Hudson Food Pantry, Boys and Girls Club Nashua, Southern NH Rescue Mission, Tolles Street Mission, St. Joseph Hospital Employee Food Pantry, Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter, Salvation Army, St. John Neumann Church Food Pantry, Nashua Community College Student Food Pantry, Hudson Baptist Church Food Pantry, Girls Inc, Hillsborough County Meals on Wheels, Trinity Baptist Church Food Pantry, Brookline Food Pantry, Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry, Stepping Stones, Opportunity Networks. Hillsborough County Gleaners was a partner in organizing this annual event.

Hunger is a pervasive problem across the United States. Hunger means more than missing a meal. For some families, it often means having to choose between buying groceries or paying rent. By gleaning, we fought hunger and supported health by distributing fresh and local produce to those in need in our community.

United We Sleep

On September 22 we held our 7th Annual United We Sleep to End Hunger and Homelessness. This fundraiser and awareness raiser has raised almost $400K since its beginning… all for the purpose of supporting a strong community safety net. With this year’s event being virtual, we had about 20 participants in dialogue with a dozen community leaders learning about the issues related to homelessness, including causes and pathways to self-sufficiency. We were proud to lead off this year’s event with a great presentation by Violet, a leader with our local youth group called HEAL. Violet shared his journey, including what went wrong and right along the way. We appreciate Violet sharing his story with our participants. Collectively, including a wonderful sponsorship from Liberty, the group raised $41K for the safety net from over 200 donors! We are looking forward to having United We Sleep 2024 being again in person this coming September. Look for it to get involved!
