Greetings!

Big changes, new safety concerns and tough decisions are making news across the region. This week, we’re looking at a leadership change at Northwest, the end of Nodaway County’s free severe weather text alerts, possible rural water rate increases and new courthouse security procedures. Plus, what a harmful algal bloom means for visitors to a St. Joseph pond and why Missouri’s latest school funding decision could have a significant impact on Maryville schools.

One Year Strong — Because of You

This fall, KXCV/KRNW will mark one year since the loss of federal funding for public media. Through that year of uncertainty, you — our listeners, members and supporters — have kept this station going.

Your support has allowed KXCV/KRNW to continue bringing you the news, music, conversations and community programming you count on, 24/7.

Our Fall Fund Drive will celebrate one year strong because of you and look ahead to the future of our station. We’ll be sharing stories about what your support makes possible and inviting you to help keep KXCV/KRNW here for another year.

Come see what you’re supporting! Join us for an Open House at the station on Thursday, Oct. 1, where you can tour the station, meet our staff and student workers, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how your public radio station comes together each day. You’ll also have the opportunity to record your own testimonial or station ID and hear your voice on KXCV/KRNW.

We’d love to see you — and celebrate one year strong with the supporters and listeners that made it possible.

This Week's News

Northwest Missouri State University Assistant Vice President of Facility Services Dan Haslag will retire Sept. 30 after nearly seven years in the role and 38 years in higher education facility services. Scott Kuhlemeyer will serve as interim assistant vice president, while Derek DeMott will become interim director of capital programs. Haslag helped lead the university’s $100 million infrastructure modernization project and guided Facility Services through the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 2,000 Nodaway County residents will lose access to the Textcaster severe weather alert service after it ends Dec. 31. Emergency Management Director Christy Forney says outside funding is ending and the service provider has raised its rates. Officials recommend using a weather app along with a NOAA weather radio for watches and warnings.

Nodaway County Rural Water District customers will see rate increases beginning in October to help cover the $615,000 cost of purchasing water from the city of Maryville next year. The board has not decided who will pay more or how much rates will increase, but is considering several options, including a graduated increase based on water usage.

Visitors to the Nodaway County Courthouse will soon have a new entrance on court days. County commissioners approved a request from Sheriff Austin Hann to restrict the west, Main Street-facing doors to employees. The public will enter through the east doors facing Market Street. The change is part of a new courthouse security process.

Visitors to St. Joseph’s Corby Pond are being told to avoid the water and fishing after a harmful algal bloom was detected. The city has treated Corby Pond and the Krug Park lagoon for algae, and warning signs will remain until 14 days after the bloom disappears. A few dead fish have been reported, which officials say are likely linked to low oxygen levels rather than toxins.

Missouri’s State Board of Education will not request additional funding from the Legislature for the 2027-28 school year. Maryville Superintendent Philip Pohren says the decision could mean a $600,000 to $1 million funding decrease for the district, while smaller districts with fewer than 350 students could also lose “hold harmless” funding.

Beyond the Midwest: NPR News

  1. President Trump is hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping for a high-profile state visit, with discussions expected to focus on artificial intelligence, trade, rare earths, Iran and Taiwan. The two leaders are also expected to discuss extending a U.S.-China trade truce, while Washington may seek China’s help in negotiations with Iran. AI is another key issue, including concerns over national security and competition between the two countries.
  2. The Trump administration’s effort to dismantle the Education Department is intended to reduce bureaucracy, but employees interviewed by NPR say the changes have made the agency more complicated and costly. Staff have been scattered across other federal agencies, while some education grants have faced difficulties moving to new systems. The administration says the changes will improve efficiency and save money, but the costs of the restructuring remain unclear, and some employees and lawmakers have raised concerns about wasted spending and disruptions to services for students and schools.
  3. A federal judge has temporarily ordered the Trump administration to restore White House press access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico after their journalists’ credentials were revoked. U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly said the outlets are likely to succeed in showing their credentials were revoked without adequate due process and questioned the administration’s national security justification. The White House has argued the outlets’ reporting posed national security concerns and spread false information, while the news organizations say the ban was retaliation for their coverage.

Harvest Public Media

The USDA is closing its Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland as part of a nationwide reorganization that will relocate about 2,000 researchers. Employees say the rapid closure has disrupted their work and personal lives, while raising concerns about the loss of specialized agricultural research and expertise. The USDA says the moves will reduce costs and better align researchers with food producers. Legal challenges have temporarily paused the closure, but the facility is still slated to close in October.
