Greetings from Assemblywoman Latrice M. Walker of the 55th District

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s name wasn’t on the ballot, but his fingerprints certainly were.
Mamdani endorsed three congressional candidates in what were considered competitive districts – two of the winners members of the Democratic Socialists of America. All three people he endorsed for Congress scored victories in Tuesday’s primary election.
The mayor is also member of the DSA, which racked up wins in two state Senate races and four Assembly races. The victories piled up, despite millions of dollars in anti-DSA spending.
“Zohran is the catalyst,” Jeff Leb, a strategist who runs a super PAC that supports moderate candidates against DSA challengers, told NY Focus. “His win woke people up.”
Among the DSA candidates who won state races on Tuesday:
*State Sen. Jabari Brisport tallied nearly 79% of the vote, defeating Marlon Rice in the 25th District (Bedford-Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and parts of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, and Brownsville).
*Eon Huntley got about 58% of the vote, beating incumbent Assemblywoman Stefani Zinerman in the 56th District (Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights).
*Christian Celeste Tate earned nearly 62% of the vote, beating incumbent Assemblyman Erik Dilan in the 54th District (Bushwick, Cypress Hills and part of East New York).
*David Orkin, with almost 59% of the vote, defeated incumbent Queens Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar in the 38th District (Glendale, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, Woodhaven, and parts of South Ozone Park and South Richmond Hill).
The primary winners are each expected to be elected in majority-Democrat districts in November. If that holds to form, according to the New York Post, the DSA will hold four of the 63 seats in the state Senate and 10 of the 150 seats in the Assembly.
The three big wins in congressional primaries for Mamdani-backed candidates grabbed national headlines and cemented his position as a force in the Democratic Party.
Mamdani persuaded Claire Valdez, a state assemblywoman, to run for Congress. She defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso by 20 percentage points to win the Democratic primary for the open seat in the 7th District.
“The victory is not mine, it is ours,” Valdez said Tuesday night at a victory party for DSA-backed candidates.
Valdez was a relative newcomer to the area, having lived in the district, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens, since 2019. Reynoso has much deeper ties to the community and superior name recognition.
Reynoso also had the endorsement of the very popular Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, who announced that she will not seek reelection, opening the seat.
A beaming Mamdani chimed in at the DSA celebration.
“What you have all shown this evening – whether for state Assembly, state Senate or Congress – is that a year ago, it was not the end of a political movement,” he said. “It was the beginning.”
Community advocate Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in what pundits called a major upset in the 13th Congressional District. A democratic socialist, Avila Chevalier defeated the first Dominican American in Congress, earning just under 50% of the vote in a district that represents Upper Manhattan and part of the Bronx.
Democrat Brad Lander, the former city comptroller and mayoral candidate, also received Mamdani’s Midas touch. He defeated incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District with 66% of the vote.
Lander has been vocal critic of Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
“Democratic voters are very clear and don’t want to pay for any more of (Israel Prime Minister) Netanyahu’s wars,” he said.
| | ASSEMBLYWOMAN WALKER THANKS THE PRESENTERS AND GUESTS WHO CAME TO THE ADVISORY BOARD MEETING ON SATURDAY | | |
Above photos by Renée S. Trotman : (1) Andrew Epstein (2) Assemblywoman Latrice Walker with attorneys Bill Lienhard (left) and Yolande Nicholson (right)
Assemblywoman Latrice Walker welcomed attorney Andrew Epstein – the first of three presenters – to her monthly advisory board meeting on Saturday.
Epstein, a staff attorney for Build Up Justice, has an expertise in wills, estates, and tax matters. He provided valuable information on strategies for New Yorkers who want to be intentional about the distribution of their assets once they’ve gone on to be with the ancestors.
Attorneys Bill Lienhard and Yolande Nicholson focused on the predatory methods of criminals who seek to steal people’s homes through deed theft and other schemes.
Lienhard, who founded Leinhard and Grumbach in 2019, shared the harrowing story of one woman’s battle after a criminal syndicate stole her home. Nicholson, a civil rights attorney, stressed the need for stronger penalties and clear language in the law to punish deed theft, which has primarily targeted homeowners of color in Brooklyn and Queens.
Deed theft is tantamount to equity theft, and it robs people of their rightful shot at generational wealth.
The meeting was broadcast live on Assemblywoman Walker's Facebook page.

| | FRANK CARONE, A FORMER SENIOR ADVISER TO MAYOR ERIC ADAMS, ARRESTED BY FBI IN BRIBERY PROBE | | |
A one-time top adviser to former Mayor Eric Adams and three other people were indicted on charges of bribery and money laundering conspiracy -- part of an FBI investigation into a “scheme to exploit the city’s migrant crisis for profit,” according to court papers released on Wednesday.
Frank Carone was arrested Wednesday morning after federal agents searched his home, sources told CNN. His brother Anthony Carone, and hotel operators Crystal Chen and Yan Po Zhu, were also arrested, CNN reported.
The indictment accuses Frank Carone, an attorney and Brooklyn power broker, of accepting bribes from Chinese nationals Chen and Zhu in exchange for directing a multimillion-dollar contract to house migrants in their hotel in 2022. Authorities allege Frank Carone received $120,000 which was laundered through his brother’s law firm.
Adams issued a statement through spokesperson Todd Shapiro after news broke about his former adviser’s arrest.
“Frank Carone has dedicated decades of his life to public service, the legal profession, and helping countless individuals, businesses, and charitable organizations throughout New York,” Adams said. “This is an ongoing legal matter and my prayers are with his family.”
The indictment is just the latest round of corruption allegations tied to Adams or members of his inner circle. The former mayor was indicted on corruption charges in 2024, accused of wire fraud, bribery, soliciting campaign funds from foreign nationals in exchange for political favors, and conspiracy, CNN reported. The one-term mayor pleaded not guilty.
The Trump administration intervened and dropped the charges against Adams, saying the prosecution interfered with the former mayor’s ability to combat illegal immigration.
Adams never recovered politically, dropping in the polls before eventually abandoning his reelection bid.
The four defendants charged Wednesday in the 13-count indictment were released after their arraignment whie they await trial.
A judge set bail for Frank Carone at $2 million, $500,000 for Anthony Carone, $100,000 for Chen and $8 million for Shu, Gothamist reported.
| | AUTHORITIES RAID HOMES OF TWO FORMER HIGH-RANKING NYPD OFFICIALS WEDNESDAY MORNING; PART OF CORRUPTION PROBE | | |
The NYPD and FBI conducted raids at several locations across the city on Wednesday, including the Queens home of former Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, according to published reports.
The investigation was described by ABC News – which cited sources familiar with the matter -- as a corruption probe.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the investigation.
"This morning, members of the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau and the FBI executed search warrants as part of a criminal investigation being pursued by the NYPD, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York,” Tisch said in a statement. “The investigation is ongoing and concerns conduct by former and current members of the NYPD.”
Maddrey was the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer before he resigned on Dec. 20, 2024, after he was accused of pressuring a lieutenant into sex in exchange for perks and overtime, NBC News reported. He has denied any wrongdoing. Authorities also searched Maddrey’s home in January 2025 in connection with an investigation into overtime abuse.
The current probe is also targeting Tarik Sheppard, whose home was also searched. His phone was seized, according to NBC News. Sheppard is the former chief spokesman for the NYPD.
Current Chief of Manhattan South, James McCarthy, has been transferred and placed on modified duty in connection with the investigation, NBC News reported. Sources told NBC that Lt. James Lee, also with Manhattan South, was under investigation.
ABC News reported that investigators are looking at how assignments and promotions were doled out – among other things.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani weighed in.
"Commissioner Tisch has already shown a real commitment to cracking down on corruption and ensuring that the public servants in the NYPD are held to the highest standards," Mamdani said. "I am confident that she will lead us through this process."
