Volume 1 / October 2022

Last Month…

September first we started decorating for the Christmas train here at the Denton FarmPark. I know it seems early but it's necessary for the event.

We can’t forget the Denton Yard sale day that was on the 3rd last month and was a great turnout.

We tripled in size form June with over 60 families selling.

Also, we had private events and a craft show held by NC BAM that was open to the public.

Trick or treating will be in the campgrounds from 5:30- 7:30 on October 29th, look for decorated campers.

Recipe of the month:

Spinach Dip

1 lb. bacon- cooked and crumbled

3 8oz. cream cheese

10 oz. pkg. frozen spinach- thawed and drained

1 onion chopped.

1/2 C. mayonnaise

1 C. shredded mozzarella cheese

5 oz. shredded parmesan cheese

After the bacon is cooked and chopped, Mix all ingredients and put into a casserole dish and bake at 350 degrees for 25 min.

Serve with chips or melba toast.

What to expect this month

Lots of family fun events going on this month so grab your calendars and let’s get started!

Our first fall event for the month is the Carolina Pickers Antique Festival and Swap Meet and that’s happening on October 6th, 7th, and 8th. The last event that took place in March of this year had over 600 vendors, so you know that you can expect lots of antiques, parts, and cars to look at while you’re here. There will also be live music, train rides, and a live auction in addition to the vendors covering about 25-35 acres so make sure you wear your walking shoes. The gates will be open from 8am – 4pm and admission is $7 a person.

Next is the 13th Annual AMCA Southern National Meet the following weekend, October 13th, 14th, and 15th. The AMCA, formally held in the spring, is a motorcycle group that has their meet here at the FarmPark every year and allows the paying public to join and see the hundreds of bikes and bike parts that will be here at the park. The members of the AMCA will get in for free and the public will need to pay $12 to enter. There will be bike games, shows and judging on top of many vendors and parts.

The South Davidson High Schools Cross Country team will have two meets here at the FarmPark on the 10th of October and the 18th of October, so we want to wish them luck.

Lastly to wrap the monthly activities up, the Fun on the Farm Fall Festival will be the 28th, 29th, and half a day the 30th. The hours for that Friday and Saturday are 10am-6pm and that Sunday will be 1:00pm-6:00pm and the park will be open to all after that for trick or treating with no admission required. There will be a costume contest for ages 3-10 at 4:30 on the 30th and the Southeast Threshers Queen scholarship pageant committee and Kaylyn Fairchild, the newly crowned queen will judge and award the top 3 winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place). There will be craft vendors, live music, train rides, free yard games, pumpkin smash in the pit, mini train, bouncy houses and so much more. The admission is only $8, and memories that will last a lifetime!

Preview for next month

As October comes to an end, we will continue with our Christmas lights and preparing for the Country Christmas Train. Turning this historic venue into a winter wonderland takes a lot of hard work from our wonderful grounds crew!

“October is a symphony of permanence and change.”

One thing you will notice as you come back to the park is that our office gate at the main entrance of the park has been remolded. Many of you know this building to be where you check in for camping and to buy tickets for events.

Those who love the pulls we have at the park, will be excited to hear that progress has been made on the new track located behind the auction shed.

Puzzles

Don't forget that during all of our events you are able to enjoy the best Cheesecakes in town! Laramies Cakery will be open in the Gingerbread house selling all her famous freshly baked goods for everyone to enjoy. If you're lucky, you could watch Laramie in action as she's baking these delicious treats! Her menu varies from cake pops and cookies to cheesecakes and cobblers. You will also be able to get regular coffee and a bottle drink out of the cooler and hang out with your friends at one of her tables. So make sure next time you show up at a Denton FarmPark event, to stop at Laramies Cakery!

Why I Ache For Fall…

By: Christina Frost

I have two confessions… I live in Texas, and I don’t do summer.

Some people love the heat. These sun worshipers soak up the golden rays of June, July, and August — basking on tubes along lazy, winding rivers or giving themselves up to be deliciously roasted alive laying next to the ocean.

I, on the other hand, used to take ice cold baths as a kid and if the water was even slightly warm it was TOO HOT.

I crave shade. Crisp, playful breezes. Wrapping myself up in soft sweaters, leggings, and scarves as blustery clouds billow overhead. This is my happy place.

Sadly, we do not get a lot of gloriously cool days in Texas. Half the time you're freezing one hour and sweating the next.

I dream of the northeast part of the United States where the trees blaze with reds, oranges, and yellows once the weather starts to turn. I wonder what it would be like to go on an annual hay ride where you drink hot cider next to fields of pumpkins — each one waiting to be snatched up to add a pop of color to a plain white porch.

I went to Maine once and almost scared our driver off the road when I saw a WILD apple tree and gasped, “APPLES!” You simply don’t see those in Texas...

I believe the heart of why I yearn for fall though is all the whimsy it brings.

People start baking in the fall. We break out recipes new and old filled with cinnamon, nutmeg, pie crusts and ooey gooey fillings. We get a chance to surprise people with what we’ve baked for them or just get to enjoy our own creations at home, curled up in our favorite chair, watching rain pelt the window outside.

Hygge, eat your heart out!

We finally start thinking about decorating our homes again. We unbox those garlands of autumn leaves, blow the dust off from smiling scarecrows, and get ready to carve the most original design on a pumpkin we can think of (or a great idea we found on Pinterest anyway).

And speaking of pumpkin carving, Halloween is a holiday that champions creativity at its core! “What are you going to be this year?” people ask, and for a moment you’re free to imagine that you can be anything or anyone you want for one glorious Hallow’s Eve evening…Not to mention ALL those memories of hard won candy come flooding back. Now, as an adult, you get to play the part of making a child’s night magical when they arrive at your door and recite the sacred words of decades past, “Trick or Treat!”

All of this just scratches the surface of this enchanting season. Those who love fall know our affection for it runs deeper than pumpkin spice lattes and new wool jackets. It whispers to our hearts dreams of coziness, thoughtful gestures, and lovely, mysterious change.

And I, for one, plan to drink up every single moment of it!
