Parent - Teacher relationships
It takes a village to raise a child and in this village, parents and teachers are two integral components. It is important that parents and teachers communicate regularly with each other. In this way, any problems that arise may be dealt with effectively and in a timely manner.
It is also important every parent teacher conversation, meeting and disagreement is conducted with mutual caring, support and respect. It has to be this way if we are all to work together, find successful solutions for our children, co-operate, understand and appreciate each other.
Teachers and parents need each other. We both have valuable tips for one another. We are all human and sometimes it is hard to focus on the big picture all the time. But if we are all working towards the same goals it will be much easier for the child.
And please remember to talk positively about your teacher in front of your child - they are always listening.
We must work together. After all, imagine the greatest reward of all. A happy child!

Report Cards
The purpose of reporting and communicating student learning is for students to be more involved with their learning and to ensure that parents are well informed about their children’s progress.
Choice School is supporting our students by communicating with parents on an ongoing basis. There will be more focus on growth and progress. This involves more fluid processes and changes in what we assess and how we assess, as well as how we communicate student learning to students and their families/caregivers. The goal of communicating student learning is to ensure that communication between home and school is effective and timely, so that:
- parents are well informed about their child’s progress;
- parents are involved as partners in a dialogue about their child’s progress and the best ways to support and improve learning; and
- students are provided with information that is meaningful to them and helps them to improve their own learning.
As you read your child's first term report card, please remember that it is a progress report. It should highlight what your child has been learning, the strengths of your child and areas where improvement is needed. Rather than giving a percentage or a grade, a rubric is used to show how your child is doing. You might already be familiar with rubrics, as teachers often use rubrics to mark a child’s work. Rubrics are a great tool when a child is first introduced to an assignment, as the expectations for the assignment are laid out. This takes the guesswork out of what the teacher is asking for.
The rubric above will give you an idea as to how this should be read. If you have any questions about your child's report card, it is important to direct these with your child's teacher in the first instance.

Spelling Bee
At the end of Spring Break, some Choice School students participated in the BC Chapter of the Canadian Spelling Bee!
In the primary portion, Paij (Hemlock), Alistair (Cedar), and Kai (Cedar) participated. Each of the students did an amazing job practicing and participating, and a huge congratulations to Kai who came in first place. He is now the BC Champion in the primary group and will be representing the BC Primary Students in the Spelling Bee of Canada! This is a great achievement and we are so proud of Kai for his hard work.
In the junior portion, Hanson (Pine), Darel (Hemlock), Louie (Birch), and Akaal (Pine) competed and also did absolutely amazing. Akaal came in second for the BC Juniors! We are so proud of each of the students who chose to take on this extracurricular activity, and look forward to hearing how Ganeev (Fir) does in his chapter competition, and Kai’s experiences at the Canadian Bee!
This is an initiative that we started last year, and we are delighted that it is now beginning to yield success. Our students are all amazing individuals and we are delighted that Choice School is able to help each one of them achieve the best version of themselves.

Spirit Week
The last week before spring break was "spirit week" and everyone at Choice School had lots of fun. Each day had a different theme (as in the poster above). The whole idea behind spirit week is to help students feel closer to one another and part of a larger whole. It was a fun week when everyone came together and joined in depending on the theme for the day.
Tuesday was a very special day when the entire staff (and some students!) came dressed as our principal, Mr. Bolina. He was unaware of this and was very appreciative of our efforts to put a smile on his face.
During the week, students and staff came to school with various types of outfits, including interesting (?) types of hair (crazy hair day).
It was a fun way to conclude the second term.

Grandparents Tea
Grandparents play an important role in the development and upbringing of our children, and we encourage them to join us for our school functions.
This year, we are hosting a special “Grandparents Tea” that is designed to honor them for their contributions. During this event, our grandparents will be welcomed by our students and offered tea, coffee and refreshments in the gym. In addition, we will have musical performances by some of our students. Grandparents will then have an opportunity to tour the school and visit their grandchildren’s classes and enjoy some time with them.
Please RSVP by completing this form by Wednesday April 5, 2023 so that we can plan accordingly.

Re-enrollment
Letters for re-enrollment have been sent out to all parents. We offer priority re-enrollment for current Choice families. With many inquiries and confirmed experience days in the coming weeks, it is important that you confirm your re-enrollment for the 2023/24 school year.
While most families have confirmed their enrollment for next year, we are still waiting to hear from a few. This is important so that
we can start planning for the 2023/24 school year.
Please also note that we are offering enrollment into grade 9 for our grade 8 students.

Museum of Surrey
During the first week after spring break, Hemlock class took a field trip to the Museum of Surrey. They explored historic and contemporary exhibits which covered range of topics from all walk of life.
They also visited Indigenous Hall which had interactive stations. They learned more about the history of disrupted languages in BC and more through the scavenger hunt game. They will connect this to classroom learning in Social Studies, when they learn about the effect of European and American Immigration, and relocation and resettlement of First Nation in BC.

Mathematics Centrum math contests
We are pleased to inform you that we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in these contests again this year.
The contests start at grade 3 and go all the way up to grade 9. We encourage our mathematically enriched students to write these contests as these promote critical thinking and problem solving skills.
This year contests will all be written on Wednesday April 5, 2023. Please see Mr. Bolina or Mr. Bennett for more details.

Open House
On Tuesday April 25, 2023, Choice School will be offering an Open House for any prospective families. An Open house is an ideal opportunity for any family to come into the school and see how we operate. This Open House will include a tour, given by our CMS students, and then a chat with the Principal to discuss possible enrollment. Refreshments will be offered.
If you know of any families that are thinking of Choice School as a possible choice, please ask them to call the office so that we can register them for a tour.

Coding/Robotics
As part of our enrichment program, we will again be embarking on coding and robotics classes at Choice School. This will be done through Ultimate Coders who will be sending an instructor once a week to teach coding.
Ultimate Coders has created a unique, game-based curriculum and system to meet the needs of the parents while keeping the children engaged in the learning process and build the skills they’ll need for the future, including coding, problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork. This program was started last year and proved to be very popular among students.
Not only is computer coding vital to success in the technology-driven economy of the 21st century, but it can teach kids a broad range of skills that will help them in countless other areas such as problem solving and critical thinking.
Each of our students will be looking forward to this and will benefit immensely!
