Launch of Warming Season Services

A press conference was held on November 21, where City of Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, and DHHS Executive Director Shakita LaGrant-McClain announced the start of Warming Season Services.

The City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, and a wide network of community partners are launching this year's Warming Season on November 23. This coordinated effort ensures that individuals and families experiencing homelessness have safe, warm, and accessible options during periods of severe cold.

The initiative brings together city agencies, service providers, faith communities, outreach teams, and volunteers to offer protection from winter weather throughout the coldest months. Warming Season typically includes extended shelter hours, additional warming center sites, and enhanced street outreach.

"I want every person - particularly our most vulnerable residents - to have a safe and warm place out of the elements during our cold months," Mayor Cavalier Johnson said. "We are working in partnership to reach that important goal."

This year, the coalition is implementing a proactive prevention approach aimed at quickly connecting people experiencing homelessness for the first time with rapid services - helping reduce the reliance on warming centers whenever possible.

They were joined by DHHS Executive Director Shakita LaGrant-McClain. Together, they highlighted the government's continued commitment to ending homelessness in Milwaukee.

The event concluded with a guided tour of the new Marcia P. Coggs Health and Human Services Center.

National Hunger and Homelessness

Awareness Week

This past week, November 16 to 22, was National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, an annual effort that brings people together across the country to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness.

Did You Know?

1 in 11 Wisconsin households struggle with food insecurity. Here in Milwaukee, nearly 1 in 4 residents have faced food insecurity, with some neighborhoods seeing rates as high as 65%.

Homelessness reached record levels across the nation in 2024. But here in Milwaukee, there’s hope. Our city saw a 17% decrease in homelessness compared to 2023 — a sign that collaboration, compassion, and community-driven solutions are making a difference.

Together, we can raise awareness, inspire action, and work toward a future where everyone has food on their plate and a roof over their head.

What is NOFO?

Bi-Annually, HUD releases the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to CoCs across the country. This gives local coalitions the opportunity to assess community performance, system gaps, and apply for renewal funding for existing projects. HUD also announces bonus project funding based on national priorities and the intent to apply for those projects is open to the public.
