As forecasters predict a potentially wetter-than-normal winter driven by El Niño, the City of Lemon Grove is taking proactive steps to prepare for heavy rainfall and its potential impacts. Our top priority is ensuring that our municipal infrastructure, staff, and emergency resources are fully prepared to act. City crews are actively inspecting and maintaining storm drains, culverts, and drainage systems, evaluating historical flood areas, and conducting tree safety assessments to minimize storm-related damage.
To streamline these efforts, the City has formed an internal El Niño working group to coordinate preparation, response, and recovery across all departments. We will be tracking weather updates, refining after-hours staffing plans, coordinating with contractors, and reviewing emergency communication protocols. Our objective is to mitigate preventable hazards ahead of time and ensure a swift, coordinated response when severe weather strikes.
How Residents Can Prepare at Home
Community partnership is essential to keeping Lemon Grove safe during the rainy season. Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps now:
· Clear Debris: Keep private drainage systems, gutters, and nearby storm drains free of leaves and trash to allow proper water flow.
· Inspect Property: Check roofs, repair gutters, safeguard below-grade entryways, and inspect retaining walls and slopes.
· Secure Outdoor Items: Tie down or store outdoor furniture and objects that could be displaced by strong winds.
· Protect Against Flooding: Consider stocking up on sandbags or other protective materials early. Never dump trash, dirt, or yard waste where it can wash into storm drains.
Family Safety and Emergency Planning
Being prepared also means having a clear family plan. We recommend organizing an emergency kit with enough food, water, medications, and essential supplies to sustain your household for up to 14 days.
To stay informed during an emergency: · Download Genasys Protect for real-time alerts and evacuation information. · Sign up for Nixle alerts. · Follow the City of Lemon Grove on Instagram and Facebook for official updates.
· Never drive through flooded roadways, as moving water can be deceptively dangerous.
Resources and Sandbag Information
For Lemon Grove residents, emergency sandbags will be distributed at Fire Station 10 once supplies arrive. Note: Sandbags are not yet available, but the City will issue a public announcement as soon as distribution begins.
