WASHINGTON (CNS) — Some U.S. bishops spoke out against the easy accessibility to guns in the country following a May 24 rampage that left at least 19 children and two of their elementary school teachers dead in Uvalde, Texas.
Watch below as Pope Francis prayed for victims and their families of the school shooting in Texas during his general audience on May 25:

The Holy Spirit Changes Everything
|
|
|
|
Come, thou Holy Spirit, come;
and from thy celestial home shed
a ray of light divine. Heal our
wounds, our strength renew; on
our dryness, pour thy dew. Wash
the stains of guilt away. Bend the
stubborn heart and will. Melt the
frozen, warm the chill.
These selected verses from an English translation of the venerable hymn, the Veni Creator Spiritus, remind us that the Holy Spirit has the amazing power to
change things, and people. But that shouldn’t surprise us at all..

Diocese offers prayerful, practical assistance to those battling mental health issues
|
|

BY LAURA KILGUS, Assistant Editor, Rhode Island Catholic
PROVIDENCE — During May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and consistently throughout the year, the Catholic Church works to support and advocate for those living with mental illness as well as their families.
In Rhode Island, the Diocese of Providence offers individual mental health counseling that gives clients the security and faithfulness of the Lord’s love. Most clients seek help for grief, relationship issues, inner conflict, anxiety, depression, and help with coping and problem solving, said Peter Magnotta, LICSW, a social worker for the Diocese of Providence. The diocese also provides support for loved ones of those affected by mental health issues, and refers clients to Catholic-oriented counselors according to need, location and affordability.

Catholic Schools Arts Festival held in celebration of 150th Anniversary of the Diocese of Providence

By RICK SNIZEK, Executive Editor, Rhode Island Catholic
PORTSMOUTH — Under bright blue skies Saturday about 225 students from 15 Catholic elementary and high schools across the diocese stretched out on the lawn at St. Philomena School of the Sacred Heart to celebrate the arts and to make some music history. The Catholic School Arts Festival was a signature event in the Diocese of Providence’s yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary. With temperatures in the upper 80s, food trucks served up ice cream to provide some respite from the heat, as well as gourmet empanadas to satisfy the appetites of the hundreds who gathered to participate in the music and stage performances, along with their families and friends who came to watch.

BY COLE DESANTIS, Rhode Island Catholic Correspondent
PROVIDENCE — On Thursday, May 19, the Rhode Island House Committee on Finance met to discuss Bill H-7442 “An Act Relating to State Affairs and Government — Healthcare for Children and Pregnant Women — Equality
in Abortion Coverage.”
The bill, sponsored by Democratic Representatives Liana Cassar, Edith Ajello, Robert Craven, Katherine Kazarian, Christopher Blazejewski, Jason Knight, Karen Alzate, Nathan Biah, Michelle McGaw and Susan Donovan, proposes to expand upon taxpayer-funded Medicaid to cover “prenatal, delivery and postpartum care,” including abortion coverage. It would also repeal the abortion coverage exclusion for state employee insurance plans.

According to the Providence Journal (5/5/22, page 7A), Rhode Island's Office of Management and Budget produced an analysis on March 24, the key finding of which is that the state of Rhode Island could potentially save $5.4 million a year in taxpayer dollars if we allow state taxpayer dollars to pay for the killing of preborn babies in abortion rather than delivering these same babies.

BY JULIE ASHER, Catholic News Service

Ukraine: the war is killing people and wounding the earth
As Pope Francis writes in Laudato sì “War always does grave harm to the environment and to the cultural riches of peoples.” It’s exactly what is happening in Ukraine as the war continues to wreak death and destruction.

By Svitlana Dukhovych, Vatican News
It seems that as we are forced to confront, on a daily basis, with the loss of so many lives and so much suffering, no room is left for other concerns, such as those for the environment. But it is in war, that more than ever, we understand the value of basics, including the need for a healthy place in which to live.
