Executive Director's Corner

Greetings,

The end of November has brought us the season’s first snow, a reminder that winter is just around the corner. In December, there is a flurry of activities (pun intended) in preparation for the holidays, including shopping, gift wrapping, family functions, parties, and much more. The hustle and bustle of the season can be both exhilarating and exhausting.

In the midst of the glitz and glitter, it is important to remember to take care of your health, check on others who may be struggling this time of year, and make time for the 5 Rs: 1) remember, 2) reflect, 3) rest/relax, 4) restore/replenish/renew, and 5) resist.

Remembering entails recalling the people and things important to you, including those no longer with you.

Reflecting entails intentionally contemplating your values, beliefs, aspirations, and relationships.

Resting or relaxing entails slowing down and stepping back from the busyness and stress of the season.

Restoring, replenishing, or renewing entails self care to center, balance, and nourish vital energies.

Resisting entails knowing your limits, saying no when you feel overwhelmed, and refusing to allow commercialism to overshadow the true meaning of the holidays.

It can be easy to overindulge in food, libations, and spending. Grief and loss can be magnified during the holidays. For some winter’s shorter days and lack of sun can lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder. For more information and resources, please see the references and resources page.

Wishing you peace, love, and good health!

Best,

Venoncia

Happy Holidays (Happy Hannukah, Merry Christmas, Winter Solstice, and Happy Kwanzaa),
