Mosquito look-alikes out in force
As temperatures rise, the Mosquito and Vector Control District is fielding numerous reports of swarms resembling mosquitoes in local neighborhoods and along bike paths. These pests are actually non-biting midges, often mistaken for mosquitoes due to their appearance and swarming behavior. Though not harmful, midges can be a nuisance, especially near water sources.
During peak times, midges can blanket homes and vehicles, congregating around lights and vegetation. Fortunately, they are short-lived and harmless. To deter them, consider moving outdoor lights away from entrances, avoiding bug zappers, and using yellow or sodium vapor lights.
