Chris Cannon
Executive Director of Friends of Southwest Virginia
We could have been lawyers. We could have been dentists. We could have been accountants. But no, we decided to pursue careers in tourism. In our Dream Jobs series, we interview some of the best and brightest within the tourism industry about how they broke in and get their advice to the next generation of tourism leaders.
Today, we feature Chris Cannon, Executive Director of Friends of Southwest Virginia.
What’s your job title?
The world's longest. Ha! But really... Executive Director of Friends of Southwest Virginia, the Southwest Virginia Cultural Heritage Foundation, & 'Round the Mountain: Southwest Virginia's Artisan Network
How long have you been at your job?
Since July of 2017.
What's your favorite thing about your job?
I've been in tourism and economic development since 2009 with the majority of my work in Georgia. I love that state more than almost anywhere and nearly everyone in it, but when I had the chance to return to my hometown and home region of Southwest Virginia, I couldn't pass it up. And I've never looked back - the economic situation here is unlike anywhere else, so we get to do really innovative, groundbreaking work. We're literally creating an economy from the ground up... its meaningful, sincere work alongside the most dedicated region of partners there is anywhere. And it just so happens to be the most beautiful place in the world.
What's your advice to young people looking to break in to tourism?
Call up a tourism office or attraction and ask to hang out for an hour or two.The people in this industry are in the top 1% of friendliest people anywhere and they'd love to help you out.
First job?
My favorite job ever: I spent a summer working at a little ice cream shop during high school. I gained 20 pounds, but it was the happiest 20 pounds of my life.
Worst job?
I somehow got assigned to tutor math while in college. I was a Media Studies and Art Major. You do the math on how that went.
If you didn’t work in tourism, what industry would you want to work in?
Historic Preservation - I can't go anywhere without finding three dozen buildings or houses I want to save. I could also see myself returning to my first job and owning an ice cream shop -sweet and delicious memories!
