Celebration of Hope: Gratitude for a Community That Shows Up

On Friday evening, friends old and new gathered at the Hyatt Regency in NE Portland for the 28th Annual Celebration of Hope — an evening dedicated to compassion, community, and the shared belief that every Oregonian deserves stability, dignity, and opportunity.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who joined us in support of Catholic Charities of Oregon’s mission.

Voices of Hope

Thirteen-year-old Leah didn’t wait to grow up to make a difference. As part of a school service project, she raised funds, purchased 13 much-needed comforters, and—alongside her mom, Emily—has provided home-cooked meals to residents at Kenton Women’s Village. But what’s most inspiring isn’t just what she’s given. It’s the thoughtful questions she asks and the care she brings to every visit.

In this week’s Voices of Hope, meet Emily and Leah—a mother-daughter duo showing how compassion, curiosity, and community can bloom at any age. Their story is a reminder that when even one voice rises in hope, it has the power to warm an entire village.

Dear Portland: Stories, Community, and Solutions

What does Portland’s housing crisis look like through the eyes of the people living it every day?

Dear Portland is an immersive exhibition framed as a letter to the city we all love, transforming data into powerful human stories that invite reflection, connection, and action.

Catholic Charities of Oregon is proud to partner in bringing this community conversation forward, helping create space for empathy, understanding, and solutions alongside our neighbors.

Join us on Friday, March 6, from 2:15–6:15 p.m. to walk through the exhibit, assemble hygiene kits for neighbors experiencing homelessness, and learn more about Catholic Charities’ work across Oregon.

Tickets are free. Reserve yours today.

Refugee Families in Oregon Face Growing Uncertainty

Across Oregon, refugee families who came here seeking safety and opportunity are facing a new and deeply unsettling reality.

Catholic Charities of Oregon joins fellow members of the Oregon Refugee Resettlement Collaborative in raising serious concern about recent federal policy actions that could lead to mass arrests and detention of refugees who have not yet obtained permanent residency, along with the sudden loss of critical supports like food assistance and health coverage.

For thousands of families, the consequences are already being felt.

Over the past five years, roughly 15,000 refugees have lawfully resettled in Oregon after extensive federal vetting. Many are now workers, students, parents, and neighbors helping strengthen communities across the state. Until recently, many families were making steady progress toward stability through employment, education, and community support.

Today, that progress is at risk.

Help Us Put Food on Tables This Winter

Catholic Charities of Oregon is hosting a Winter Food Drive to support our neighbors facing ongoing food insecurity. With rising costs and continued uncertainty around food assistance programs, many families experience the greatest strain well after the holiday season ends.

We have collection bins placed at participating organizations throughout Portland, including Providence and the Archdiocese. We also have made it easy to contribute via a QR code. Monetary donations allow us to purchase fresh food and high-need items in bulk.

Every donation — large or small — helps ensure our neighbors have access to nourishing meals during the colder months. Thank you for being part of a community that looks out for one another.
