Congratulations Alex Scholten!

“If you want our community to be a great place to live, work and grow, we need to be involved.”

-       Alex Scholten

Alex Scholten is a respected and humble leader in the communities of both Fredericton and New Maryland. He is active in the business community as an independent grocery store owner of Victory Meat Market, and he is active in the non-profit sector. Alex is a man who gives generously of his time, resources and expertise in many different areas. For instance, he has given generously to Greener Village to ensure that their clients receive fresh produce or even a holiday turkey. He has also served as a youth soccer coach in New Maryland and currently spearheads the Chamber of Commerce’s Business Immigrant Mentorship Program to help newcomers succeed in our city.

In a time when sitting on boards or taking up causes may be used as a resume builder or status symbol; it should be pointed out that Alex’s dedication goes beyond meetings and policy. Alex also gives of his time to sit as a New Maryland Village Councillor in order to make positive change in his community. Alex’s commitment to community building will have long lasting and wide-reaching impact.

On a smaller scale, but one that still has a huge impact, during this year’s National Volunteer Week (which took place the week of April 27 – May 3), Alex took time out of his busy schedule to drop off a basket of snacks to the volunteers of the New Brunswick Multicultural Council. This seemingly small gesture reminds us that despite all of the challenges we may face daily, there are people like Alex who genuinely invest in creating community, and in doing so, inspire others to do the same.

CYCLE FOR KIDS UPDATE

The YMCA's Cycle For Kids Event was a smashing success! This fundraiser would not have been possible without the generous support of our presenting sponsor, the Epsilon Y Service Club and our Handlebar Hero, Maple Leaf Homes. We also couldn't have done it without all of the participants, donors and volunteers who truly made the day special. Particular shout outs go to Natalie, who led our riders on an incredible indoor journey, and to Margaret Loughrey & Jon Holt for being our Cycle for Kids Champions!

Thanks to everyone's support, participation and donations, we raised a whopping $38,890 for the YMCA's Youth Impact Fund. This will go directly to supporting Youth, Children and Families in our community that may require financial assistance to access the programs and amenities that we can offer at your YMCA.

If you wish to donate to the Youth Impact Fund, and help us to reach our goal of $40, 000 please follow this link to donate TODAY!

Strength, Hope and Opportunity:

Nargis's Muay Thai Journey

When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, life changed dramatically for Afghan women and girls. Education, sports and personal freedoms were taken away. Opportunities disappeared over night.

But for Nargis, coming to Canada opened a new chapter. Here, she found freedom to learn, space to grow and the chance to pursue her passions. One of those passions is Muay Thai, a martial art that builds not only physical strength, but also confidence and resilience. At the YMCA of Fredericton, Nargis

trains with determination. Every punch and kick is more than a move, it's a symbol of hope for Afghan girls who are denied these same kinds of opportunities. Nargis's goal is to one day represent Canada's National Muay Thai Team and win a world championship, inspiring others along the way.

Nargis's journey shows how Canada's opportunities, combined with courage and perseverence, can help young women transform their futures and send a powerful message back home: strength cannot be silenced.

Join Muay Thai at the YMCA and stand with young women like Nargis, who turn challenges into strength and dreams into action!
