THURSDAY OF THE TENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Father Mark Gabriel Gadoury ordained by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin
BY COLE DESANTIS, Rhode Island Catholic Correspondent
PROVIDENCE — On Saturday, June 4, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, D.D., ordained Deacon Mark Gabriel Gadoury to the priesthood at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul.

The Rite of Ordination was an emotionally moving event. The sublime and at times resounding singing was performed by the Gregorian Concert Choir, led by Monsignor Anthony Mancini, the cathedral’s rector and musical director, and was accompanied by a powerful orchestra and music played by Philip Farone, the cathedral organist.

Disappointed in God
Something that Pope Francis said at a recent audience, while speaking about prayer, caught my attention. The Holy Father said: “If you have some wound in your heart, some pain, and you want to object, object even to God, God will listen to you. God is not afraid of our prayer of protest. No! God understands."

Rhode Island diocese expands ministry to expectant mothers, new mothers
BY LAURA KILGUS, Assistant Editor, RI Catholic
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (CNS) — With Ada’s first pregnancy, she didn’t have the support, she didn’t know the resources available to her. She often ran out of diapers and clothes and had trouble finding people to talk to about it.

Her OB-GYN suggested that she reach out to St. Gabriel’s Call, a ministry of the Diocese of Providence dedicated to easing a mother’s worries by providing families with diapers, toiletries, cribs, baby carriers and many other items.

“Knowing that there are resources out there for moms could definitely help in the decision of having a baby and not resorting to other options,” Ada said.

With 3 weeks to go, Charity Appeal reaches 98% of goal
BY RICK SNIZEK, Executive Editor, Rhode Island Catholic
PROVIDENCE — With three weeks to go until the Diocese of Providence’s 2022 Annual Catholic Charity Appeal closes, the campaign has reached 98% of its goal, with $6,643,443 in total gifts pledged. An additional $156,557 needs to be raised by June 30 in order to meet this year’s goal of $6.8 million.

“We’re in a great position to hit the goal, and we are so grateful to our faithful supporters,” said Tim McCaig, director of the Office of Stewardship and Development. “If you have yet to respond, there’s still time to make a difference. Your donation will ensure that charitable ministries and programs of the church are fully funded for another year.”

In 2013, in the Rhode Island Catholic, I wrote: "How many children must die, how many families must suffer, how many communities must be forever scarred, until we as a society agree to reasonable limits on firearms?" The question remains to be answered, even now... - Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, June 7, 2022

“It is time to say “no more” to the indiscriminate trafficking of weapons. Let us all strive to ensure that such tragedies can never happen again.” - Pope Francis, May 25, 2022

Pope makes Pentecost appeal for Ukraine
During his "Regina Coeli" address on Pentecost, Pope Francis called for prayers for Ukraine and for the whole of humanity.

Pope says he’s still considering possible trip to Ukraine
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Sitting in a wheelchair in the courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, Pope Francis allowed himself to be grilled by a group of youngsters, including one who asked when he would go to Ukraine “to save all the children who are suffering there.”

“I want to go to Ukraine, but I must wait for the moment, you know,” Pope Francis responded to Sachar, a boy from Ukraine now living in Rome.

“I have to look for the right time to do it,” the pope said June 4, explaining that he would not want to do something “that could do more harm to the whole world than good.”
