Summer often brings more time outdoors, family vacations, pool days, sports, and community events. While the season can be full of fun and connection, the heat and busy schedules can also leave many people feeling run down if they are not supporting their health along the way.
The good news? Summer wellness does not have to be complicated. A few simple habits can go a long way toward helping you feel energized and nourished throughout the season.
Stay Ahead on Hydration
Hydration is one of the most important — and most overlooked — aspects of summer health. Between heat, humidity, exercise, and time spent outdoors, our bodies lose more fluids and minerals during the summer months.
Even mild dehydration can contribute to:
• Fatigue
• Headaches
• Muscle cramps
• Dizziness
• Brain fog
• Low energy
One of the easiest ways to support hydration is to keep water accessible throughout the day. Carrying a reusable water bottle in the car, to the pool, or while traveling can make a big difference.
It is also important to remember that hydration is not just about water. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium help maintain proper fluid balance, especially during long outdoor days or exercise.
Use electrolytes in your water and opt for some naturally hydrating foods including:
• Watermelon
• Cucumbers
• Citrus fruits
• Strawberries
• Leafy greens
A simple rule of thumb: if you wait until you feel thirsty, you may already be mildly dehydrated.
Keep Healthy Snacks Handy
Summer schedules are often less structured. Road trips, sports tournaments, summer camps, and pool days can make it easy to rely on convenience foods that leave us feeling sluggish later.
Keeping balanced snacks nearby can help maintain energy, support blood sugar balance, and prevent the “grab whatever is easiest” cycle many people experience during busy days.
Simple travel-friendly snack ideas include:
• Mixed nuts or trail mix
• Fresh fruit
• Beef sticks or jerky
• Cheese sticks
• Hard-boiled eggs
• Hummus and vegetables
• Protein smoothies
• Roasted chickpeas
Snacks that combine protein, healthy fats, and fiber tend to keep energy steadier and help reduce crashes and cravings.
Planning ahead before leaving for the pool, road trips, or outdoor events can make healthy choices much easier.
Protect Your Skin Wisely
With more time spent outside, protecting your skin becomes especially important during the summer months.
In addition to seeking shade and wearing hats or protective clothing, sunscreen can help reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Many health professionals recommend mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed as readily as some chemical sunscreen ingredients.
It is also helpful to remember that healthy skin is supported from the inside out. Proper hydration, nutrient-dense foods, quality sleep, and managing stress all play a role in supporting overall skin health.
Small Habits Add Up
Summer wellness does not need to feel overwhelming. Staying hydrated, keeping nourishing snacks nearby, and protecting your skin are simple habits that can help you enjoy your summer to the fullest.
