This Independence Day carries special significance as our nation begins celebrating America's 250th birthday—a milestone that honors the people, stories, and shared values that have shaped our country for nearly two and a half centuries.

Coffey, McCollum among 2026 M-Club Hall of Fame Class

The Voice of the Bearcats received the nod as a member of the 2026 M-Club Hall of Fame Class along with other greats including Ben McCollum, Kim Spriggs, Maddy Bruder, Justin Pitts, Trevor Adams and the 2016-17 Northwest men's basketball team that won the program's first national championship.

The induction banquet will be held in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom Friday, October 30.

This week's news

Lanham Music's Rock Camp gave young musicians the opportunity to form bands, learn to collaborate and perform live after a week of rehearsals. The camp ran June 15--20, challenging students to prepare songs across multiple genres for public performance on the final day. Lanham Music teacher Beaux Lux said the camp helps students build confidence by performing with others. Lux said creating opportunities for young performers is one of his goals because there are few venues available for musicians under 21.

Missouri State Highway Patrol driver examination stations across the state will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Although Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, state offices on serving the holiday will be closed Friday. As a result, no driver examination services will be available that day. Anyone planning to take a driver's license examination or conduct other business at an examination station should plan accordingly. Normal operations at all driver examination stations will resume Monday, July 6.

As summer picnic season gets underway, the University of Missouri Extension is urging Missourians to take extra precautions to prevent foodborne illness, especially with dangerously hot temperatures in the forecast. Extension food safety specialists say warm weather, limited refrigeration and a lack of handwashing stations can create conditions that allow harmful bacteria to multiply quickly if food is not handled properly. Food should not be left unrefrigerated for more than two hours, or more than one hour when outdoor temperatures exceed 90 degrees.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture has updated animal movement requirements to help prevent the spread of New World Screwworm, State Veterinarian Steve Stubberg announced. Effective immediately, animals entering Missouri from a state that contains an infested zone must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection completed within 14 days of entry. The certificate must verify the animals were inspected and found free of New World Screwworm infestation. Questions about the updated requirements may be directed to the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Animal Health Division at animal.health@mda.mo.gov.

Mozingo Independence Day Celebration

Celebrate Independence Day at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park as the community gears up for an extra-special celebration for the nation’s 250th birthday.

Festivities include a full lineup of family-friendly fun, live music from the Mixtapes (a 90s cover band), free face painting, bingo, and a Youth/Adult Scramble on the Watson 9.

Throughout the celebration, guests can also enjoy sand volleyball, youth fishing tournaments, bounce houses, and a variety of food trucks.

The event wraps up with a can’t-miss fireworks display over the lake at dusk, creating the perfect finale to a summer holiday!

Spoofhound Spotlight

Maryville superintendent Philip Pohren and high school principal Bryan Grow join us in studio ahead of the Fourth of July holiday for this month's Spoofhound Spotlight.

Grow took on an administrator role in the district in 2019 as the high school's assistant principal. In May, after Thom Alvarez retired, Grow was elevated to principal. He discusses his growth as an educator, his excitement for the new challenge and what Maryville means to him.

Pohren and Grow also discuss work around the district, specifically with gymnasiums at all three schools seeing updates, and Amendment 5 on the ballot in August.

Copperhead Conspiracy

The Copperhead Conspiracy recounts a little-known Civil War-era plot in which anti-Lincoln Northerners collaborated with Confederates to organize an armed uprising in several Midwestern states. Their goal was to overthrow state governments, release thousands of Confederate prisoners, and pressure the Union into ending the war while preserving the Confederacy and slavery. The conspiracy was ultimately thwarted by a Union spy who had infiltrated the group.
