Community Champion Spotlight:

 James Cochrane & Investar Bank

Local Partnerships Help Big Dreams Outdoors Grow

At UCP of West Alabama, some of our greatest opportunities come from local partnerships with people and businesses who believe in our mission and choose to be part of the work.

James Cochrane, West Alabama Market President of Investar Bank, is a wonderful example of that kind of community partner. James and the Investar Bank team have continued to support Big Dreams Outdoors not only through giving, but through their time, relationships, and willingness to show up.

James attends UCP and Big Dreams Outdoors events, helps raise support for hunting and fishing trips, assists with setting up outdoor experiences, and connects others in the community to the mission. His involvement reflects what makes local partnerships so powerful: people using their influence, resources, and relationships to create meaningful opportunities right here in West Alabama.

Big Dreams Outdoors gives people with disabilities the chance to enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, and other outdoor experiences that may not otherwise be accessible to them. These moments create confidence, friendships, independence, and lasting memories.

We are grateful for community partners like James Cochrane and Investar Bank who understand the importance of supporting local programs that directly impact local people. We also encourage our community to support local businesses that invest back into local causes. When you choose businesses that care about the people and needs of West Alabama, you help strengthen the same community we all share.

Partnerships like this help UCP of West Alabama continue opening doors, building connections, and helping people with disabilities live a Life Without Limits.

Grateful for UCP, Grateful for West Alabama!

Recently, I had a conversation that honestly left me feeling a little discouraged. But it is interesting how God works, because the more I thought about that conversation, the more grateful I became.

Grateful for UCP.

This week, UCP of West Alabama attended the 2026 UCP Annual Conference in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Leanna Feely, CEO, and Becci Hauser, Chief Development Officer, represented our agency at this national gathering of UCP affiliates.

For some, attending a national conference may simply look like travel. But for those of us doing this work every day, it is much more than that. It is an opportunity to learn from other UCP affiliates across the country and in Canada, hear what is working in other communities, talk through shared challenges, and bring ideas back home that can help us serve people better in West Alabama.

About UCP National.

UCP National connects local affiliates like ours to something bigger than ourselves. It gives us access to leaders, policy updates, best practices, advocacy efforts, and people who understand the work we do every day. It also gives local affiliates a stronger voice on issues that affect people with disabilities and their families everywhere.

But when we think about UCP of West Alabama, we think about what happens when that national mission becomes local, personal, and life-changing right here at home.

In January 2021, UCP of West Alabama was serving 24 families in Tuscaloosa County. Today, we serve more than 3,000 families across 19 counties in West Alabama.

And behind every number is a person.

Adults in our employment services are earning paychecks, building confidence, and becoming part of their communities. High school transition students are preparing for life after graduation and learning where to turn next. People in our residential program are going out to restaurants, movies, concerts, community events, and outdoor adventures. People in our day program have connection, purpose, and opportunities beyond their four walls. Babies and young children are receiving therapy and support during some of the most important years of development.

That is why opportunities to learn, connect, and grow matter. When we attend conferences, build relationships, and learn from others, it strengthens the work we do here at home. It helps us return with fresh ideas, renewed energy, and a deeper commitment to the people and families who depend on UCP of West Alabama.

We are grateful for the larger UCP network.

We are grateful for the work happening across the country.

And we are especially grateful for the people of West Alabama. We are grateful for the families who trust us, the staff who show up every day with compassion and commitment, the businesses that open their doors, the community partners who believe in inclusion, and the friends and neighbors who continue to support this work in quiet and meaningful ways.

West Alabama is not just where we serve. It is home. It is where lives are being changed, opportunities are being created, and people with disabilities are being seen, valued, included, and celebrated.

At UCP of West Alabama, this work is about people, purpose, opportunity, and helping individuals with disabilities live a Life Without Limits.

A Night to Remember at PARA Prom Night

Residents supported through UCP of West Alabama’s residential program recently enjoyed a very special evening at PARA’s Prom Night at the Belk Activity Center in Tuscaloosa.

The event was held on April 17, 2026, and included great food, music, dinner, and time with friends. With the theme “Dress to Impress,” everyone arrived ready for the night in beautiful dresses, suits, bow ties, corsages, and big smiles. The bright, neon, semi-formal theme made the evening feel fun and festive from the moment they arrived.

Events like this are about so much more than one night out. They are about friendship, confidence, community, and the opportunity to take part in meaningful experiences. For the people we support, prom is a chance to feel celebrated, seen, and included.

Our residential program provides daily support for adults with disabilities, but our work goes far beyond meeting basic needs. We want the people we serve to enjoy full lives filled with friendship, community involvement, and special memories. Whether it is attending prom, going out to dinner, participating in recreation, or simply spending time with friends, these experiences matter.

We are grateful to Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority for hosting Prom Night and creating such a fun opportunity for the community. We are also thankful for our staff, who help make sure the people we support have opportunities to enjoy life outside the walls of home and program settings.

At UCP of West Alabama, our mission is to help people with disabilities live a Life Without Limits. Nights like this are a beautiful reminder of what that looks like in real life: dressed up, surrounded by friends, enjoying good food, music, and laughter, and making memories that will last long after the evening ends.
