AT&T ASPIRE AWARD
Communities In Schools of Washington (CISWA) is proud to be 1 of 10 organizations to share in $9.25 million from AT&T Aspire this year. Launched in 2008, AT&T Aspire is the company’s initiative to help provide access to education and training people need to get and keep good jobs.

This generous award allows CISWA to deepen our impact in the communities of Federal Way, Lakewood, Pasco, and Renton as we focus on meeting the diverse needs of students, including those in poverty, English language learners, and students of color.

Communities In Schools of Federal Way is utilizing this funding to deepen our services at Todd Beamer High School by having two School Outreach Coordinators working every day to meet the needs of our students.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Juan, an 11 th grader at Decatur High School, began working with our School Outreach Coordinator Darius Alexander as a 6 th grader at Saghalie Middle School. At that time Juan struggled with his behavior and had little interest in achieving at school. Through the course of middle school Juan and Darius built a relationship focused on helping Juan understand and deal with life outside of school. In 8 th grade, Juan made the decision to apply himself at school and work towards building a better future for himself.

This year, Juan asked Darius, who is now the School Outreach Coordinator at Decatur High School, to attend a presentation he was giving as a part of his involvement with Advancing Leadership. He was prepared and passionate during his presentation, asking his peers to be involved in a project to better integrate students with special needs into mainstream classrooms. Juan is now a 4.0 student and determined to push himself to excel to be able to create a better life for himself and his family. Juan has come a long way and earned the respect of his peers and admiration of adults in the community. Keep up the good work, Juan!
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTS
RACE AND PEDAGOGY
YOUTH SUMMIT
CIS Students from Thomas Jefferson High School and Todd Beamer High School attended the Youth Summit as part of the Race and Pedagogy Institute at the University of Puget Sound. Students had a chance to sit with other high school students in discussion circles to brainstorm ways their generation can find their voice to dismantle systems of white supremacy and patriarchy in our society.

The Race & Pedagogy Institute (RPI) is a collaboration of the University of Puget Sound and the South Sound community that integrates academic assets of the campus into reciprocal partnerships with local community knowledge and experience to educate students and teachers at all levels to think critically about race, to cultivate terms and practices for societal transformation, and to act to eliminate racism.
SOUNDERS FC PRO SPORTS
CAREER DAY
Our School Outreach Coordinator, Kaitlin Thomas, at Federal Way High School accompanied a group of marketing students on a field trip to the Sounders FC Pro Sports Career Day. The students got to listen to professionals that work in the business and marketing side of the Sounders Club talk about their path to getting into the position, what a normal work day looks like, and give advice for students interested in the field.

Their big pieces of advice were to never turn down any opportunities to gain experience, and to be willing to do the work that nobody else wants to do. Afterwards, the students got to watch the game!
BREAKFAST RESULTS
