The St. Joseph Public Library is inviting children and teens up to the age 18 to take part in its summer reading program aimed at encouraging reading throughout the summer months. Youth who read for a minimum of 28 days will receive a free book and be entered into a grand prize drawing. Reading can be tracked online through the library's Beanstack platform or at any of the four St. Joseph Public Library locations. The library will kick off the program with a party from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carnegie Library.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to plan ahead as Kansas City prepares to host matches during the FIFA World Cup. MoDOT says hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to travel through Missouri during the tournament, bringing heavier traffic not only to Kansas City but across the state. To help reduce congestion, most highway construction projects in the Kansas City area will move off the roadway during the event. Transportation details for fans attending matches and festival events are available through the KC 26 website.

Conception Abbey will soon have new leadership after Abbot Benedict Neenan announced his resignation following nearly 10 years serving as abbot of the northwest Missouri monastery. The resignation will take effect July 11. On the same day, the solemnly professed monks of Conception Abbey will elect the monastery's next abbot. Neenan said he is grateful for the trust and support of the community during his time as abbot and looks forward to continuing to serve the abbey in a new role.

The City of Chillicothe is inviting the community to a "Meet the Heartist" art reception today. The reception is to celebrate the newest KC Parade of Hearts sculpture on display in downtown Chillicothe. Community members will have an opportunity to meet sculpture artist Nicole Lauran and learn about the inspiration behind the heart design. The reception is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The University of Missouri Extension is offering a free Community Gardening Toolkit designed to support the growing number of community gardens across Missouri. The toolkit is based on research and real-world experiences and provides a flexible framework for neighborhoods for neighborhoods and organizations looking to start or sustain community gardens. Bill McKelvey, senior project coordinator with University of Missouri Extension and author of the toolkit, said successful community gardens rely as much on people as they do on plants.

As Stroke Awareness Month comes to a close, we check in with the Stroke Team at Mosaic Life Care to get tips on what symptoms to watch for, the urgency to get treated right away if you're showing signs of a stroke, and the collaborative work that goes into treating stroke patients at Mosaic from the initial emergency room visit to rehab and recovery.
