Keeping kids safe online

The internet is an essential part of everyday life. In particular, the use of cellphones is increasing, especially in children and young adults. While the use of cellphones is great in certain situations, these are very easily abused by many children and young adults. In particular, the use of cellphones in classes is a major source of disruption.

Earlier this week, Premier Eby unveiled measures aimed at enhancing child safety, including restricting the use of cellphones in schools.  may want to use this as an opportunity to develop or reassess their own policies regarding student access to and use of mobile devices during school hours.

Jump Rope for Heart

The month of February will be "JUMP Rope for Heart" month at Choice School!

JUMP is an event to raise awareness for heart and brain health, participate in healthy habits, and fundraise for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. The event will be organized by the JUMP Committee, a group of students who are planning and promoting JUMP for the school. We will kick off the event on February 1st and each week students will have the chance to win JUMP prizes by participating in different heart healthy challenges.

A letter has been out to families with a link to the school's fundraising page. Please visit the link to set up your child's personalized page and start collecting donations. JUMP offers Thank You Gifts Cards to students who fundraise $25 or more. You can learn about their gift card structure here.

To top it all off, students have a chance to earn a school-wide prize for meeting our fundraising goal. We aim to raise $4,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation this year and if we achieve this goal, every child in the school will earn a pizza lunch! We hope students will have fun staying active and healthy this month!

American math Contest 8

Many of our students wrote the AMC 8 math contest. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

Results will be announced early February.

Open House

Choice School had a second Open House this week. There were a number of families that came to the event, seeking enrollment for the 2024/25 school year.

These events take a lot of planning and we were fortunate enough to have some parents and students to help us. Prospective parents had the chance to speak to parents and get an insight as to how their children gained from Choice School.

We are also very proud of our student ambassadors as they took the parents on a valuable tour of the school. Everyone commented as to how informative the students were when giving the tour.

Science Fair

Choice School will be hosting its first ever science fair on Wednesday February 7, 2024.

To prepare for this, every students has been working on a project in which they have to research, experiment, survey and then answer a scientific question. We have been watching this come to fruition as some of the projects look absolutely amazing.

There are projects on atoms, chemistry, astronomy, food sciences and much, much more!

We invite you and your family and friends to come and enjoy the evening and congratulate all our students on their outstanding efforts.

Donations

We are so grateful to our community for the support and confidence that they have in our programs. To support us, we get donations in kind (books for the library, for example) and sometimes, members of our community donate in cash. We are very grateful to the Fuyang Future Education Foundation and the Ren family for donations of $50,000 and $10,000 to the school.

As a school, we aim to provide valuable resources to our students to aid in their learning. Therefore, these donations are a very welcome addition.

We appreciate that time and money is valuable, and the readiness to contribute to the school is an indication of your commitment to the well-being of our community. Over the course of the next year or so, we will be looking forward to implementing many projects within the community. As a result, we will be looking for continued support throughout the school year.

With the generous support of all parents and community, students and staff at Choice enjoy a warm, caring community that fosters the highest standards of academic, social, and emotional growth. The efforts of all volunteers is a vital part of this community.

School start times

This is a gentle reminder that school starts at 8:30 am each morning. It is important that students arrive by this time as lessons start at 8:30. Many classes start the day by quiet reading for 10 minutes. This is a perfect way to start the day.

However, we notice that students arrive at various times during the first 30 minutes. While we do understand that many factors come into play in arriving to school, we ask that parents make every effort to arrive by 8:30 am. When students arrive one by one after 8:30, it is difficult to maintain the momentum and consistency of instruction when all the students are not in the class.

Your attention to this is greatly appreciated.
