FIRE - Oregon is on track for its worst wildfire season yet. Listen to or read this NPR All Things Considered article for information on a range of issues that affected this fire season.

Currently, The Trump administration has denied two requests for federal grants to help with Oregon wildfires. But that should not come as a surprise. According to this Politico article, "It's 3 times harder for blue states to get disaster funding under Trump." In the article, you can scroll down to see a chart outlining the Presidential approval rates for disaster relief from Reagan to Trump. The visual is stiking.

We have a Republican State Senator and a Republican State Representative. Who better to express outrage to this Republican administration? Contact them immediately to voice your concerns and ask whether they have been in touch with their contacts in Washington to remedy this situation. Have they joined the efforts of other state leaders? Following the agency’s denial of federal assistance grants for the two fires, Oregon’s U.S. senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, both Democrats, wrote to Robert Fenton, the head of FEMA, to express alarm and argue that the decision represented “a major shift in administrative policy” for the agency. Have Smith and Boice offered their support to our state government in the process of appealing these decisions?

WE'RE FLOATING OUT

AN IDEA

After a decade of rallying every Friday in Port Orford, INCC members are discussing an idea of moving those weekly rallies to Saturdays.

Some of the pros:

• Gold Beach Indivisible rallies every Saturday. A community group in Bandon rallies every other Saturday. When scheculed, Coos Bay rallies are held on Saturdays. Travelers on Highway 101 would see a consistent resistance movement up and down the southern Oregon coast - all on the same day.
• When major national call to action rallies are scheduled, it is almost always on a Saturday.
• Some community members have told us they would like to rally but cannnot participate on a weekday.

Some of the cons:

• Friday rallies are a longstanding tradition. Do we risk loss of participation or interest if we change the rally day?
• Some people have built their schedules around Friday rallies and could not rally on a Saturday.
• Change is always hard!

22nd Annual Picnic in the Park in honor of US Coast Guard Day and Lighthouse Day

Come join the 22nd Annual Picnic in Port Orford Heads State Park in honor of US Coast Guard Day and Lighthouse Day. Bring chairs, blankets, a picnic lunch and enjoy music with local roots at the Port Orford Heads Lifeboat Station Museum at 1:00 PM on Sunday, August 2nd. The Cape Blanco Heritage Society and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department sponsor the event. For more information, click here.
