Avian Influenza: Protecting Your Backyard Flock

Avian influenza is returning to Ontario, and each case brings us closer to a potential human health threat. To educate small flock owners, WDGPH has launched a new Backyard Birds Landing Page. While backyard birds like chickens, ducks, and quail can provide fresh eggs and a fun hobby, they can also carry germs such as salmonella, campylobacter, and avian influenza, which can make you sick. These germs spread through feathers, droppings, coops, and eggs. Young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.

Install a Programmable Thermostat to Save Energy and Money

A programmable thermostat is an easy way to cut energy consumption and lower utility bills. By setting specific temperature schedules, it ensures heating and cooling systems run only when needed. In winter, it lowers the temperature when you're away and warms up before you return, while in summer, it avoids cooling an empty house.

This small investment leads to long-term savings and a more sustainable home.
