2025 TAX RECEIPTS: ALL envelope donations must be in to the Church by December 28 to be included in the 2025 year.  No receipt will be issued after December 31.

Which Is Our Viewpoint When We Come To Communion?

There are things that have caused believers to disinvite each other at the Eucharist table and here is one of those issues:

Consubstantiation Vs. Transubstantiation

Transubstantiation is the belief that the substance of the bread and wine is entirely changed into the body and blood of Christ, while consubstantiation is the belief that the body and blood of Christ are present in, with, and under the bread and wine, which remain unchanged. The main difference is the change of substance: transubstantiation involves a complete transformation, while consubstantiation maintains the bread and wine alongside the real presence of Christ. 

Transubstantiation

• Definition: The substance of the bread and wine is fully transformed into the substance of the body and blood of Christ. 
• Key idea: The change is at the level of substance, while the appearances (accidents) of bread and wine remain the same.
• Analogy: A single substance replaces another. 

Consubstantiation

• Definition: The body and blood of Christ are truly present with the bread and wine, but the bread and wine themselves do not change their substance. 
• Key idea: Christ's presence is joined to the elements, meaning the bread remains bread, and the wine remains wine, but both are present simultaneously. 
• Analogy: A sponge with water—both the sponge and the water are distinct but together in the same place

I know that some of us are what we call "cradle Anglicans," that is those who were born in an Anglican household and were baptized as infants, my question to everyone this week, regardless of "cradle Anglican" or not, is where do we stand as Anglicans - transubstantiation or consubstantiation? What is our viewpoint?
