At Dash and Scout, we believe that learning happens best when we grow together. One of the most powerful parts of our Dave’s Place weekends is peer mentorship. Our mentors watch participants not only learn new skills, but also step into leadership roles that encourage and inspire others.
In July and August, we were so proud to see Ashley High take on the role of peer mentor during both the Women’s and Men’s Weekends in Virginia Beach. Ashley worked alongside staff to welcome participants, prepare the space, and guide her peers with patience, confidence, and joy. She modeled leadership in everyday ways like setting up meals, supporting activities, and being a steady, encouraging presence for her peers.
For Ashley, stepping into this role meant more than simply helping out. It gave her the chance to use her own strengths in service to others, to take pride in her abilities, and to grow her confidence as a leader. Each time she offered a helping hand or a word of encouragement, she was building her own skills while showing others that leadership is possible for everyone.
For the participants, having Ashley as a mentor was just as meaningful. They saw someone who has walked in their shoes now guiding them with understanding and care. Her example showed them that independence and leadership are not far off goals, but attainable with support and practice. Many participants felt reassured and inspired by her presence, knowing that they, too, could one day be mentors for others.
Peer mentorship is at the heart of our mission, and Ashley’s story is a beautiful reminder that leadership is not about being perfect. It’s about showing up, sharing your gifts, and helping others shine. Together, we are building a community where everyone leads, learns, and belongs.
Thank you, Ashley, for leading with heart and showing us all what true mentorship looks like. Your example paves the way for others to rise up and become role models in our community. We can’t wait to see more participants step into these roles and continue shaping Dash and Scout into a place where every person belongs and every voice matters.
