SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2024

Around the Council

September All Staff

On September 20th, the Council held our second in-person All Staff meeting of the year at Camp Winona. This time, staff voted on activities and chose to do service projects around Camp Winona. Staff deep-cleaned the cabins, trails, and even power-washed canoes!

We wrapped up the meeting with improv led by our very own Michael Fowle! Below are some photos of the Camp Cleanup!

Women of Distinction

On October 9th the Council held its 2024 Women of Distinction. This event recognizes the contributions of outstanding women in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle and celebrates their philanthropic efforts and community service initiatives.

The honorees for this year were Cindy Largent-Hill, Dr. Chiquita Howard-Bostic, Valerie Smith, and Kristie Hadley. Each honoree received a pin with a diamond to symbolize strength and a pearl to symbolize the ones Juliette Gordon Low sold in order to fund the creation of Girl Scouts.

My Favorite Things

Here are some of Alex's favorite things!

1. Lately I have been loving Pilates. I started Pilates during my senior year of college, and it's just a great way to get active and meet new people.

2. I am super passionate about ice hockey, as I played for 4 years in college. I have been playing hockey since I was 5!

3. I love reading, especially any novels. I most recently read "The Only Plane in the Sky," and I found that book to be incredibly moving.

4. I love to cook, as it's a great way to bring people together and enjoy a fun afternoon. My roommate and I have been grilling a lot lately!

Alex Snow joined our council as a new Membership Support Coordinator.

Staff Celebrations

Property Team Building

Property did some team bonding this fall!

From Tammy:

"Todd won arm wrestling!

Jacob was the sharpshooter!

Hank ate the most pork ribs!

We are going to do it again in March before our crazy season begins."

Share the good news! Send celebrations to Human Resources to be included next time.

For Cooking & Eating

To make makes 2 loaves:

Fall Pumpkin Bread

This easy pumpkin bread recipe has a soft, moist crumb with a wonderful pumpkin flavor and spiced with warm cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. It’s quick to pull together with ingredients from your pantry, and it makes two loaves, which is perfect for sharing.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350˚F. Butter and lightly dust with flour, two 8 1/2"x4 1/2" bread pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 tsp baking soda, 2 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp cloves, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, and 1/2 tsp salt.
  3. In a second medium mixing bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: 3 room temp eggs, 1 cup oil, and pumpkin puree.
  4. Pour wet ingredients over dry ingredients then whisk together until smooth. Divide evenly between 2 prepared bread pans and bake at 350˚F for 45-55 minutes*, or until a toothpick comes out clean (my oven took 50 min). Let cool in the pans for 10-15 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to fully cool.

Girl Scout Proud

Give it up for Association 11 from Calvert County, Maryland! These incredible Girl Scouts worked together in shifts to collect enough supplies to fill a 15-foot U-Haul for Hurricane Helene relief. They drove it all the way to the closest town in Ashville, North Carolina to distribute to those in need.

Girl Scout Troop 1273 spent the weekend at Brighton Woods, collecting acorns for the Maryland Dept of Forestry and earning our Tree Promise patch!

Girl Scout Cadette Emma was featured on WUSA9's segment of Get Uplifted! Emma was looking for a way to help her community, and decided to hold a book drive to benefit kids at Inova Cares for Children and collected a WHOPPING 650 books to be donated! Way to go Emma!

These "Girl Scout Proud" segments are featured from our social media.
