Birchwood Construction Company presented a check for over $13,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan (BIGS) recently at their final social event of the year. The event took place at Tap 30 in downtown Petoskey, and was sponsored by First Community Bank. This generous donation was made possible by BCC family of subcontractors and suppliers, and was received with heartfelt gratitude by the BIGS team.

Gar Atchison, MBA, was recently named president and CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan. Gar’s appointment follows a national search conducted in coordination with McLaren Health Care, McLaren Northern Michigan executive leadership, members of the medical staff and the McLaren Northern Michigan Board of Trustees. Gar brings more than 30 years of health care leadership experience to McLaren Northern Michigan, many of those years in executive positions. Most recently, he served as Regional President and CEO of Marquette‐based UP Health System. Gar holds a financial management degree from the University of North Dakota and an MBA from Lake Superior State University. He is a fellow with the American College of Medical Practice Executives and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Michigan Health and Hospital Association.

The Great Start Collaborative of Charlevoix, Emmet and Northern Antrim Counties recently wrapped up the second phase of its doula initiative: postpartum training. The four-day DONA International Postpartum Doula training launched 18 postpartum doulas into the community. Postpartum doula services are most often provided in the first six months following pregnancy, labor and delivery. Click here to read the full press release. Claire Hague, OTD, has recently been named Challenge Mountain’s first associate program director. Her position supports year-round programming from adaptive skiing to nature and arts-focused activities for participants with cognitive, physical and developmental disabilities. Her role combines collaborative planning, best practices learned from her OT education, and on-site interventional strategies. The Harbor Springs native and graduate of Western Michigan University spent a 16-week internship with Challenge Mountain, beginning in January 2023. Thursday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m., come to Lyric Theater in Harbor Springs for the screening of Ripple: Casting for Change. This is a documentary about a group of middle school girls from Harbor Springs who traveled to Beaver Island this past summer on a fly-fishing adventure. It details the story of this unique group, the Adventure Club, their mission, and the girls-only excursion into the middle of Lake Michigan. Petoskey Downtown’s holiday open house is just around the corner. Friday, December 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the open house begins with an appearance from Santa, who flies into town to light the giant Christmas tree in Pennsylvania Park and greet children on the streets. The tree lighting ceremony will begin right at 6:00. This is the night when the streets are closed, and the merchants keep their stores open late to offer you warm holiday greetings and hospitality. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Chorus and guest soloists, led by Director André Strydom, will join the orchestra led by GLCO Conductor and Music Director Libor Ondras. Santa Claus will be visiting Luci and Carl’s Candy Cabin- the amazing new store in downtown Petoskey located below Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts. Santa will be inside, in front of a beautifully decorated fireplace that provides a wonderful backdrop for your Santa photos. Meet Santa Claus at 209 Petoskey Street in Petoskey, Michigan on Sunday November 26 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. He will be back Sunday December 3 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday December 10 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. These visits are open to the public and free of charge.


The Petoskey Film Series, which for years had provided free showings of movies at the Carnegie Building, made a comeback starting in September. You have three more chances in 2023 to come out and watch these free film classics. The movies are shown on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the Carnegie Building through December 6. Santa is coming to town again soon, and he will be hanging out at the Kilwins kitchen. Kilwins is continuing their tradition of making the holiday season memorable. Santa will park his sleigh outside of the store, and children of all ages are welcome to come up and get a photo with him. You can also enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate made with Kilwins heritage chocolate. Santa will be outside, so be sure you dress warmly. Santa’s sleigh will be parked at 1050 Bay View Road in Petoskey from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on November 25 and December 2, 9, 16, and 23. This event is free and open to the public. 

Of Special Note


The Health Department of Northwest Michigan has Toys for Tots donation boxes at their offices in Charlevoix, 220 W. Garfield; Gaylord, 95 Livingston Blvd.; Harbor Springs/Petoskey, 343 M-119, Suite A; Mancelona, 205 Grove St.; and Bellaire, 209 Portage Dr. The boxes are just inside the front doors. Please feel free to drop off toys for local tots during office hours until Thursday, Dec. 7, which is when they will deliver the toys to the organization. Toys for Tots is a nonprofit organization run by the Marine Corps Reserve to provide children with toys for Christmas when their parents cannot afford them. Local campaigns are conducted annually in more than 800 community in all 50 states. Local contributions are distributed to local families.


On Tuesday, November 28 in celebration of Giving Tuesday, Culver’s in both Petoskey and Charlevoix will be donating 10% of all sales to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Michigan (Bigs) to defend the potential of local children through a caring, positive adult mentor. Greenwood Cemetery is once again participating in the Wreaths Across America event, and they are looking for your assistance.
