Art is a great way to calm yourself and decrease stress levels.
Creativity
Art and creativity go hand in hand with one another.
Motor skills
It helps to develop motor skills from a young age.
Self expression
Art helps to promote self expression and self awareness.
Entertainment
Art provides entertainment and a source of enjoyment to everyone.
Can we really imagine a world where there is no art?

Family vacations
The school year provides a lot of vacation time for families to enjoy. We have two weeks at winter break, two weeks at spring break, one week at reading break. And let's not forget the two months that are available in the summer.
We also understand that, on occasion, families may opt to take additional vacation time while school is in session. While we do not encourage this, there are times when it may be necessary. If you do need to pull your child out of school for vacations, please ensure that the teacher and administration is made aware. Also bear in mind that it may have negative impacts on the child.

- How is your child doing at school?
- Will your child be able to catch up while away?
- The class might be doing an activity in which consistency is required!
- Is any work due while you will be away?
- How long is the vacation?
- Have you taken vacations during school time before as well?
- Will you able to help your child catch up?

King Tut exhibition
Pine and Fir classes had an opportunity to visit the King Tut exhibition at Canada place. This was an Immersive Experience that took guests on a journey to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. Our students experienced ancient history come to life and gaze at the Egyptian sun as it rises above the Pyramids of Giza, filling the sky with vivid color.
Traveling back in time 3,000 years to the 18th dynasty when King Tut ruled and gods like Ra and Anubis were worshiped by all, our students were able to appreciate the wonders of ancient Egypt.
This exhibition went beyond a traditional artifact display and used the power of photography and multimedia to create a time traveling adventure of discovery!
All in all, a unique educational experience.

Jump Gymnastics
Oak and Cedar classes have been participating in the enriched program at Jump Gymnastics. This is an excellent program and we are the only school in Richmond that is offering this throughout the term.
During the weekly visit to the fantastic facilities, our students learn interactive play, stretching, new skills, and increasing self esteem. It is much more than mere gymnastics.

Science World
On Tuesday January 17th Cedar and Oak classes visited Science World. The students participated in a hands-on chemistry experiment to start off their understanding of states of matter. We worked with dry ice, Gatorade, and oil, experimenting to see how matter changes through different states.
We then spent time exploring the dinosaur exhibit, learning about the new discoveries that scientists are making about extinct plants and animals, and their connections to living plants and animals. Finally, we visited the Eureka! center, learning about force, motion, and human impact.
It was a wonderful field trip and a huge shout out to the students for making it great.

Donations
We are so grateful to our community for the support and confidence that they have in our programs. To support us, we get donations in kind (books for the library, for example) and sometimes, members of our community donate in cash. We are very grateful to the Fuyang Future Education Foundation and the Ren family for donations of $50,000 and $5,000 to the school.
As a school, we aim to provide valuable resources to our students to aid in their learning. Therefore, these donations are a very welcome addition.
We appreciate that time and money is valuable, and the readiness to contribute to the school is an indication of your commitment to the well-being of our community. Over the course of the next year or so, we will be looking forward to implementing many projects within the community. As a result, we will be looking for continued support throughout the school year.
With the generous support of all parents and community, students and staff at Choice enjoy a warm, caring community that fosters the highest standards of academic, social, and emotional growth. The efforts of all volunteers is a vital part of this community.

American Math contest 8
During January, many of our students wrote the American Math Contest 8. In order to prepare for this, our students have been practicing in extended math classes and learning to solve problem solving questions.
It should be noted that, although this is a grade 8 contest, many of our grade 5, 6 and 7 students also took up the challenge to participate.
We are so proud of them all!

Beaver Computing Challenge
Our students wrote the Beaver Computing Challenge last fall. However, the official results came in January, and were awarded certificates:

Open House
Choice School had a second Open House this week. There were a number of families that came to the event, seeking enrollment for the 2023/24 school year.
These events take a lot of planning and we were fortunate enough to have some parents and students to help us. Cindy and Carly were both present from 8:30 am till around noon. We are so grateful to both the parents as they were an important part of the process. Prospective parents had the chance to speak to these parents and get an insight as to how their children gained from Choice School.
We are also very proud of our student ambassadors as they took the prospective parents on a valuable tour of the school. Everyone commented as to how informative the students were when giving the tour.

Purdy's update: We raised over $500 for the PAC from our latest Purdy's holiday chocolate fundraiser - thanks to all families that supported the initiative. Congratulations to Cedar class who raised the most money and will be the recipients of a pizza party!

Knitting
As part of the Choice Challenge for this term, our Hemlock teacher Ms. Chawla has introduced knitting. This is a very important applied skill that is being lost among the young generation.
In this mixed grade Choice Challenge class, students are learning various aspects of knitting under the watchful eye of Ms. Chawla.
And from the smiles that we see from the students, they are all loving it. Lets see what they knit up!

Tournament Chess
This is another initiative that we are very proud of. As we are the Best Elementary School Chess Team 2022, it is important that we maintain our excellence in Chess.
This chess class is offered in term 2 as a part of the Choice Challenge. In order to ensure that our students learn to play and gain success at competition level, we contracted this class to a professional chess instructor. Students ranging from Kindergarten to grade 5 have been benefitting from this class. As competitions are not far away, I encourage parents to allow their children to play chess at home so that they can practice the strategies that they are learning.
